Men's Soccer Earns 2-1 Win over Thomas

NEW LONDON, N.H. – October 2, 2011 – The Colby-Sawyer men's soccer team snapped a four game losing streak with a 2-1 win over Thomas, in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Sunday afternoon.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 3-7-1 overall and 1-2-1 in conference play. Thomas pulls even at 4-4 overall and falls to 1-3 in the NAC.

The game was a tale of two halves as Colby-Sawyer controlled the first and Thomas was in command during the second. The Chargers held a 12-4 edge in first half shots, while Thomas responded with an 11-2 edge in the second frame.

Colby-Sawyer freshman Alex Ortega (Bellingham, Mass.) gave the home team a 1-0 lead under two minutes into the game with his first collegiate tally. After the Terriers goalie tried to corral the ball, Ortega slid in and knocked it away and into the net.

The Chargers went on top 2-0 in the eighth minute when senior Derek Veilleux (Winslow, Maine) put home a cross from sophomore Kevin Flaherty (Wilmington, Mass.).

Trailing 2-0 at the half, Thomas quickly cut the deficit in half two minutes into the second frame on a goal from sophomore Michael Hand (Essex, England, UK). Sophomore Matt Ford (Mid Glamorgan, Wales, UK) took a free kick from the right flank and sent the ball across the goal mouth where Hand finished with his fifth goal of the season.

Senior Will Berry (Berlin, Vt.) earned the win and made five saves. Thomas sophomore keeper Mikkail Crockwell (St. David's, Bermuda) turned aside seven shots in the loss.

Colby-Sawyer travels to Maine Maritime on Saturday for a 3:00pm start. Thomas plays at Southern Maine on Wednesday at 3:00pm.
