Men's Soccer Stings Lyndon, 2-1

BOX SCORE

LYNDON CENTER, Vt. — October 15, 2011 - The Colby-Sawyer men's soccer team upped its overall record to 4-9-1 and its mark in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) to 2-3-1 with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Lyndon Saturday.

Alex Ortega accounted for both Charger goals in the contest as Colby-Sawyer jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead early in the game. He took advantage of a ball misplayed by a Hornet defender to the right of the Lyndon goal and deposited a shot into far side of the net at 6:46 to stake the visitors to a 1-0 lead. Kevin Flaherty was credited with an assist on the play.

Just over 20 minutes later, he extended the lead to 2-0 with a shot that deflected off the back of a defender and into the right side of the Hornet goal. Ortega's second tally was unassisted.

Lyndon (5-9, 2-4) cut the deficit in half with a little more than one minute remaining until halftime when Shane O'Donnell-Leach ran down a loose ball and drilled a shot into the net from 12 yards out.

The second half was evenly played with both teams getting ample opportunity to either extend the lead or tie the contest. But Colby-Sawyer goalkeeper Will Berry and Hornet netminder Jason Gray kept opposing strikers at bay until the final horn.

Berry made three saves to get the win and Gray stopped four shots in the loss. Lyndon outshot the Chargers in the game by a margin of 14-12.

The Chargers return to action tomorrow at 2 p.m. when they travel to Johnson, Vt. to face Johnson State. The Hornets will host New England College at the Lyndon Athletics Field. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
