Joe Soojian’s Goal in the 59th Minute Lifts Colby-Sawyer to 1-0 Win over Curry

BOX SCORE

NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 21, 2010 – The Colby-Sawyer men's soccer team earned their third straight shutout after a 1-0 win against The Commonwealth Coast Conference foe Curry. The Chargers are now 3-0 in conference play and 4-3 overall. The Colonels dip to 1-2 in TCCC action and 3-5 overall.

The teams played a scoreless opening half even though Colby-Sawyer had a couple of great chances in the offensive end. Curry junior goalie Brian Newsome (Lawrenceville, N.J.) kept the game knotted at 0-0 after making a couple of great saves.

Freshman Joe Soojian (Leicester, Mass.) slid through the defenders in the 59th minute and received a perfect through ball from freshman Cooper McNealus (Saxtons River, Vt.). The play developed at the top of the box and Newsome thought he could make a play on the ball before Soojian, but the gamble gave the attacker a wide open net. Soojian calmly chipped the ball past the oncoming keeper for his third goal of the season, which all have been game-winners.

Junior Will Berry (Berlin, Vt.) made one save and earned his third straight shutout and fourth of the season for the Chargers. Newsome made several clutch saves in which he had to jump or dive and finished with eight in the game.

Colby-Sawyer plays at Roger Williams on Saturday, while Curry will host Wentworth on Friday.
