Women’s Soccer Soars Past Green Mountain, 3-1

Box Score

NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 2, 2010 - The Colby-Sawyer women's soccer team scored three first half goals en route to a 3-1 victory over Green Mountain on Thursday. The Chargers improve to 1-0-1, while the Eagles drop their season opener.

Colby-Sawyer had a great chance five minutes into the game when sophomore Ashley Reis (Peterborough, N.H.) struck the crossbar on a shot from 12 yards. Junior Liz Allen (Holden, Mass.) was the second Charger to hit the crossbar in the 19th minute. However, the ball ricocheted to the foot of sophomore teammate Katie Carreiro (Cumberland, R.I.). Katie calmly put her first collegiate goal into the back of the net to give Colby-Sawyer a 1-0 lead.

The Chargers took a 2-0 lead in the 31st minute after earning a corner kick. Head Coach Jody Bergstrom called on freshman sweeper Stephanie Huntley (Woodbury, Conn.) to take the kick. Huntley did the rest and bent the ball into the upper right corner where no one could reach it. The goal was Huntley's first collegiate tally.

Five minutes later, the Colby-Sawyer offense was attacking again. Reis dribbled the ball into the left side of the box and sent a cross into the middle where freshman teammate Marion James (Willsboro, N.Y.) was waiting. James made one move by her defender and put the Chargers up 3-0.

Green Mountain struck 13 minutes into the second half to cut the deficit to a pair of goals. Junior Erin Burch (Lebanon, Conn.) used nifty footwork to get through a couple of defenders and fired the ball into the lower left corner of the net past the dive of Colby-Sawyer sophomore keeper Liz Malenfant (Siasconset, Mass.).

The Chargers had one more chance at a goal when sophomore Sarah Lavalle (Newton, Mass.) was the third Charger to strike the crossbar.

Green Mountain goalie Karen Davidson (Seymour, Conn.) had a solid game in net making seven saves. Malenfant earned the victory for Colby-Sawyer in her first career game in net.

Colby-Sawyer travels to Rochester, N.Y. on Saturday and Sunday to play two nationally ranked teams. On Saturday at 11:00 am, the Chargers play #10 Otterbein and on Sunday play #16 Williams and Smith. Green Mountain returns to action next Wednesday with a home contest against Southern Vermont.
