Men's Basketball Falls to Top Seeded Gordon, 77-58

BOX SCORE

WENHAM, Mass. - February 25, 2010 -
Gordon received 27 points from the TCCC Player of the Year in Aaron Trigg, as the Fighting Scots pulled away in the second half to win 77-58 before a roaring crowd at the Bennett Center.

The trio of Trigg, Greg Walker, and Brady Bajema scored 27, 20, and 16 points respectively, for a combined total of 63 points. Gordon enjoyed one of its most efficient offensive games of the season as they shot 51% as a team, including 43% from long range, and a sizzling 90% from the free throw line, sinking 27 out of 30 charity tosses.

The win puts the Gordon senior class into the conference finals for the first time. The Fighting Scots had lost in the semifinal round for 4 consecutive years, including 2 losses to Colby-Sawyer ('06 and '09). The win for Gordon also snaps a 3-game losing streak against the Chargers, dating back to last season.

The first half was tightly contested although Colby-Sawyer led for the last time, 9-8 at the 15:59 mark, after a jumper by Will Bardaglio. Aaron Trigg drilled three treys in the first half, and Gordon shot 10 of 10 from the free throw line, putting the Scots up 36-31 at the break.

After the intermission, Greg Walker began to exploit the interior of the Charger defense as he broke loose for an assortment of point blank layups and bank shots. However, senior guard Dave Rosso drained consecutive 3-pointers to keep the game close, as he pulled Colby-Sawyer within 49-41 with 13:56 to play. Moments later, Colby-Sawyer drew within 51-44 after a Corey Willis 3-pointer.

Over the next 6 1/2 minutes, the Gordon defense stifled the Charger attack, and the Fighting Scots went on a 13-2 run, to take total command of the game, leading 64-46 with just 6:30 to play. Over that time, the Chargers missed eight straight shots, and were held scoreless for over four minutes. Colby-Sawyer did not get closer than 12 the rest of the way. The Chargers were held to 33% shooting and were only 24% from behind the arc.

Jason Chevrefils led the Chargers with 14 points, while Dave Rosso and Corey Willis joined him in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Jon Chaloux, the conference's leading scorer was limited to 4 points, as he struggled with foul trouble for much of the game.

Brady Bajema dished out a game high seven assists for Gordon, while Ben Gaskill grabbed 10 rebounds. Jeff Derr came off the bench to contribute six crucial points, all in the first half, while the game was still closely contested.
