Box Score
NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 3, 2009 – The Colby-Sawyer men's soccer team opened the 2009 season with a 1-0 home victory over Castleton State Thursday evening. The win marked the first time the Chargers have defeated the Spartans in four tries. Colby-Sawyer is 1-0 overall, while Castleton State falls to 1-1.
The first half featured multiple scoring opportunities for each side, but both goalkeepers were up to the task keeping their respective team in the match. However, 10 minutes into the first frame freshman Oscar Svensson (Norrkoping, Sweden) volleyed a ball inside the box finding the foot of senior Pete Duff (Greensboro, N.C.). Duff did the rest and fired the shot into the top right corner past Spartan keeper Mike Anthony (Dartmouth, Mass.). The score remained 1-0 heading into halftime.
The second half was a different story as Castleton State turned up the pressure and controlled the ball in their offensive zone, peppering the Colby-Sawyer net. However, Chargers senior Chris Feltes (Manchester, N.H.) made several game-saving stops to preserve the 1-0 victory for the Chargers. The Spartans held a 10-0 shot advantage in the second half. Castleton's best chance came when they were awarded an indirect kick inside the box. Sophomore Josh Costa (Sutton, Mass.) flicked a pass to a charging Greg Klopfer (Voorheesville, N.Y.), but could not bend the ball enough around the Colby-Sawyer wall.
Colby-Sawyer will play its second of three consecutive home games to start the season on Wednesday, September 9. The Chargers host Clark at 4:00 p.m. The Spartans remain on the road on Monday, September 7 when they travel to Oneonta State at 3:30 p.m.
