Men's Soccer Drops TCCC Opener to Anna Maria 5-1

Box Score

NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 12, 2009 – Senior George Markopoulos (Worcester, Mass.) netted his second consecutive hat trick to lead the AMCATS to a 5-1 victory over Colby-Sawyer in a TCCC opener for each side. Anna Maria improves to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference. With the loss, the Chargers fall to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in TCCC play.

Colby-Sawyer took early momentum when freshman James Longe (Richford, Vt.) scored 27 seconds into the match. Less than three minutes later, Markopoulos netted the equalizer on a feed from senior Michael Allard (Monson, Mass.). The rest of the first 45 minutes was played evenly and the game remained knotted at 1-1.

Four minutes into the second half, Anna Maria ran a set piece on a corner kick from freshman Enco Lika (Worcester, Mass.). Lika sent a bending ball into the box and freshman Justin Hyland (Leicester, Mass.) put his head on it resulting in a goal and a 2-1 lead.

Markopoulos scored in the 59th minute and 68th minute to put the game out of reach. Markopoulos matched his hat trick from last game against Emerson with another three tallies on Saturday. He now ranks second all-time in career total points with 62.

Anna Maria would add a fortunate goal in the 75th minute when a Colby-Sawyer player tried to punt the ball past the goal line but ended up in the net. Freshman Mark Sawyer (Gardner, Mass.) made five saves allowing one goal in the victory. Senior Chris Feltes (Manchester, N.H.) made four saves in the loss.

Colby-Sawyer will play their first road game of the season when they travel to nationally ranked Middlebury on Wednesday, September 16. The AMCATS will host Becker on Thursday, September 17 at 7:00 p.m.
