Lemieux's Last-Second Layup Lifts Chargers Past Salve Regina, 75-73

NEWPORT, R.I. - February 7, 2009 - Senior guard Matt Lemieux (Manchester, N.H.) took an inbounds pass with six seconds left and went baseline to baseline to score the game-winning layup while leaving one second on the clock as visiting Colby-Sawyer College defeated Salve Regina University, 75-73, in The Commonwealth Coast Conference action.

Lemieux's game-winner came immediately after Seahawk sophomore guard Windell Hinkson (Groton, Conn.) tied the score with a layup of his own. Salve Regina had taken its first lead of the game following six straight points from point guard Ryan Birrell (Hope, R.I.), 45-43 at the 15:05 mark in the second half. The Seahawks subsequently built a double-digit advantage when senior guard Joe DeSantis (Trumbull, Conn.) sank a pair of free throws (63-53 at the 8:02 mark).

Freshman guard Will Bardaglio [Wayne, Maine], who had missed three consecutive free throws after getting injured on a hard foul behind the arc, followed DeSantis' free throws with a pair of 3-pointers to narrow the gap to two points 63-61 with 5:28 remaining. While making over 75 percent of its free throws on a season-high 41 attempts, Salve Regina made just two of its last four from the charity stripe to keep the door open for the Chargers. Bardaglio put Colby-Sawyer up by one (72-71) with a 3-pointer with 51 seconds left.

Colby-Sawyer returned the favor with a couple of missed free throws in the final minute that allowed Hinskon's game-tying layup. The Chargers had enjoyed its largest lead following a Jon Chaloux (Barre, Vt.) layup with five minutes elapsed in the first period (19-5).

Bardaglio and David Rosso (Wilmington, Vt.) finished with a game-high 21 points apiece and combined for 10 3-pointers. Senior forward Duncan Szeliga (Newmarket, N.H.) scored 10 points before fouling out with 2:26 left in the game.

Salve Regina's starting five all finished with double-figure scoring totals, led by senior guard Justin Woodworth (Ipswich, Mass.) with 15 points. Dan Royce [Mahwah, N.J.] had a 14-point effort while Birrell scored a dozen. Both Seahawks made six free throws apiece. Hinkson and Jabreche Boyd [West Haven, Conn.] finished with 10 points apiece.

Salve Regina (11-10; 6-3 TCCC) hosts Curry College on Wednesday while Colby-Sawyer (16-4; 8-1 TCCC) plays at Gordon College (both games start at 8 p.m.).
