Men's Basketball Holds on to Defeat Norwich, 85-83

Box Score

NEW LONDON, N.H. – December 12, 2009 – The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team held off a furious comeback from Norwich to defeat the Cadets, 85-83 on Saturday afternoon. The Chargers improve to 5-2 overall, while Norwich drops to 5-3.

The first five minutes of the game featured a pair of ties and six lead changes. The Cadets led early 9-8, but that would be the last time they would hold an advantage. The Chargers pulled away over the next five minutes, including three straight three pointers. Colby-Sawyer finished the stretch on an 18-2 run with several players doing the damage and led 26-11 with less than ten minutes to play.

The Chargers held their biggest lead of the game with a minute to play at 47-28 and led at the break 47-29. The halftime lead was in part due to shooting 52% from the floor and connecting on 6-of-12 treys. The Cadets were just 1-of-10 from beyond the arc and shot 33% from the floor in the first 20 minutes.

Colby-Sawyer was leading comfortably for the first 10 minutes of the second frame, but could sense the Cadets were staging a bit of a comeback. Minute by minute Norwich kept chipping away and trailed by only two when junior Jaren Jeffcoat (Dallas, Texas) connected on a jumper with four minutes to play.

The teams traded baskets over the next couple of minutes before the Cadets were forced to start fouling to stop the clock. Colby-Sawyer freshman Corey Willis (Easton, Mass.) was up to the task as he knocked down several free throws in the waning seconds. Willis finished with a team-high 17 points and made 11-of-12 free throws.

The Chargers also received a strong performance from freshman Jason Chevrefils (Manchester, N.H.). He had 16 points, eight rebounds and was 8-of-9 from the charity stripe. Senior Dave Rosso (Wilmington, Vt.) had 15 points, while sophomore Will Bardaglio (Wayne, Maine) contributed 10 points.

Sophomore Antonio Davis (Albany, N.Y.) led all scorers in the game with 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting. Jeffcoat, who leads the Cadets in scoring, had 19 points. Freshman Ryan Williams (Dallas, Texas) and junior Quincy Williams (St. Louis, Mo.) added 13 points each. Freshman guard Nickolai Havoutis (Coral Springs, Fla.) was held scoreless, but dished out 12 assists.

The Chargers are off until December 29-30 when they will be at the Staten Island Tournament. Norwich does not play until January 6, 2010 when they will host Skidmore.
