Men's Basketball Rallies for 74-73 Win at Bowdoin

BRUNSWICK, Maine - Deccember 10, 2009 - The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team rallied from a 16-point deficit with eight minutes remaining to shock Bowdoin on Thursday evening, 74-73. The Chargers improve to 4-2 this season with the victory while Bowdoin drops to 5-2.

The Polar Bears carried a three-point lead into halftime, 37-34, thanks to 12 first-half points from Ryan O'Connell, who connected on four three-pointers in the opening stanza. The Chargers stayed close, however, thanks to 61% shooting from the field.

Bowdoin took command early in the second period, using a 12-2 run to open up a 54-41 advantage with 12:04 to play. Bowdoin pushed the lead to 16 points, 59-43, when Will Hanley drove to the hoop for a lay-in with 8:26 remaining. From there, Colby-Sawyer caught fire and mounted a tremendous rally to climb back into contention.

Senior John Chaloux netted a trifecta and sophomore Will Bardaglio connected on consecutive three-pointers to spark a 15-4 run that trimmed the Polar Bear lead to 63-58 with five minutes to play. Another three-pointer by freshman Corey Willis keyed a stunning 10-0 surge by the Chargers, who took the lead on a three-pointer from senior Dave Rosso with 2:17 left, 68-65. Bardaglio would push the advantage to six points with his fourth three-pointer of the game on the next Charger possession.

Bowdoin mounted a brief comeback, cutting Colby-Sawyer's lead to two points after a Paul Sellew three-pointer with 52 seconds left, but a pair of Chaloux free-throws sealed the win with 25 seconds to go.

Chaloux led all scorers with 20 points, as Colby-Sawyer featured four players in double-digits. Bardaglio and Rosso each had 12 points while senior Chris Cox had 10 off the bench. Bowdoin had five players in double figures, led by O'Connell's 18. Hanley had 12 points and nine boards while Sellew netted 11 with nine rebounds. Mark Phillips pitched in 12 while Justin Nowell scored 13.
