NEW LONDON, N.H. – October 8, 2009- The Colby-Sawyer men's soccer team lost a hard fought battle to Brandeis, 3-2 in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon. Sophomore Alexander Farr (Nahant, Mass.) scored the game-winner in the 81st minute to lift Brandeis to the victory.
Colby-Sawyer had the first chance of the match to score when freshman
Oscar Svensson (Norrkoping, Sweden) received a service off a corner kick and flicked a header into what he thought was a wide open net. To his surprise, a Brandeis defender was waiting for the ball and saved it with his chest to keep the contest scoreless.
Brandeis had their first opportunity in the 22
nd minute. After a foul was called on Colby-Sawyer inside the 18 yard box, the Judges were awarded a penalty kick. Freshman Joe Eisenbies (Hingham, Mass.) shot the ball to the right side of the net but Chargers keeper
Chris Feltes (Manchester, N.H.) was up to the task and came up with one of his six saves on the day.
The Chargers struck first in the 23
rd minute when freshman
Kurt Carvalho (Plymouth, Mass.) took a free kick near midfield and sent the ball towards the box. Senior
Justin Varney (Belfast, Maine) gathered the ball and ripped it past the dive of Brandeis keeper Matt Lynch (Weymouth, Mass.).
Colby-Sawyer could not celebrate long as Brandeis took the kickoff after the goal and jolted down the field. Senior Corey Bradley (Holyoke, Mass.) found the equalizer 12 seconds later on an assist from sophomore Luke Teece (Tucson, Ariz.).
The Judges gained a 2-1 advantage in the 42nd minute after Bradley sent a nice service towards the net from the right flank. Freshman Eric Root (Montpelier, Vt.) controlled the ball at the far side of the net and fired it past the Colby-Sawyer keeper.
Colby-Sawyer tied the game midway through the second frame when Svensson took a free kick from 30 yards out. His shot struck the crossbar and bounced back into play. Freshman
Jon Mack (Melrose, Mass.) came flying in head first and connected with the ball sending it into the back of the net.
An evenly played affair shifted in the Judges direction with under ten minutes to play. Farr received a perfect ball at his head from freshman Sam Ocel (North Attleboro, Mass.) for the easy flick into the net.
Colby-Sawyer (1-10) resumes TCCC play on Saturday, with a home match against Eastern Nazarene at 12:30pm. The Judges (4-4-1) will host Rochester on Saturday at 5:00pm.
