Box Score
NEW LONDON, N.H. – October 3, 2009- Sophomore
Liz Allen (Holden, Mass.) scored in the 29
th minute to lift Colby-Sawyer past Gordon, 1-0 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference action, on a rainy and foggy Saturday afternoon. The Chargers improve to 5-3-3 overall and 2-2-2 in conference play. Gordon falls to 5-6 overall and 4-2 in TCCC action.
The first 20 minutes of the contest was played evenly with each team taking chances in the offensive end. However, both goalkeepers kept the opponent of the board. In the 26
th minute, Gordon senior Katie Knaus (Kensington, Conn.) thought she had given the Fighting Scots a lead, but her shot deflected off the post. Three minutes later, Colby-Sawyer was awarded an indirect kick when junior
Liz Williams (Norwell, Mass.) was taken down inside the box.
Allen and fellow sophomore
Abby Wills (Uxbridge, Mass.) hovered over the ball to try to confuse the keeper and the defenders. Wills gently tapped the ball to Allen's foot and she did the rest, striking the ball into the back of the net for her third goal of the season.
Early into the second half, the Chargers had a chance to put widen their lead after a Wills shot was saved by the keeper, ricocheting to the foot of freshman
Ashley Reis (Peterborough, N.H.). Reis fired two shots towards the empty net but they were denied by one of the Gordon defenders each time.
Gordon thought they found the equalizer once again in the 69th minute when senior Taralyn Clark (Cazenovia, N.Y.) ripped a shot on net from the right side of the box. Clark was unlucky as the ball sailed into the crossbar and was then cleared by a Colby-Sawyer defender.
Each goalie played exceptionally well in the poor conditions, keeping the game tight throughout. Sophomore
Allie Piper (Barre, Vt.) stopped seven shots en route to her fifth shutout of the season. Senior Abby Ytzen (Des Moines, Iowa) made four saves for Gordon.
Colby-Sawyer travels to Regis on Wednesday for a 3:30pm start. Gordon hosts Western New England on Wednesday also at 3:30pm.
