NEW LONDON, N.H. – October 12, 2009- The Colby-Sawyer men's soccer team fell to the Polar Bears of Bowdoin, 4-0 in non-conference action on Monday afternoon. Freshman Michael Gale (Portland, Ore.) scored two goals for Bowdoin, who improves to 7-2-1 overall. Colby-Sawyer falls to 2-11 with the loss.
Sophomore Peter Kelley (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) struck first for the Polar Bears in the 17th minute. He fired a rocket into the corner of the net on a ball from senior Hugh Fleming (Lansdale, Pa.) who set him up nicely.
Bowdoin thought they had a two goal advantage two minutes later when they were awarded a penalty kick after a foul occurred in the box. Junior Ben Denton-Schneider (San Rafael, Calif.) kept Colby-Sawyer keeper
Chris Feltes (Manchester, N.H.) guessing, but he was up to the task and made the diving save.
In the 21st minute, the Polar Bears did find a second goal when senior Carl Woock (Bethesda, Md.) hit a grounder to the right corner of the net past the goalie. Fleming picked up his second assist of the game.
Bowdoin iced the game mid-way through the second half on a breakaway goal from Gale. He was not finished, as he scored once more in the 77th minute to give Bowdoin the 4-0 lead. The defense, led by senior goalkeeper Garrick Sheldon (Cabin John, Md.), held off the attack of the Chargers the rest of the way. Sheldon finished with four saves in the victory, while Feltes finished with 10 saves for the Chargers.
Colby-Sawyer returns to TCCC play with a home contest against the University of New England on Wednesday, October 14. Bowdoin also returns to conference action with a home contest against Williams on Saturday, October 17.
