NEW LONDON, N.H. – January 21, 2009 – The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team improved to 4-0 in TCCC play with a 93-74 victory over Curry, on Wednesday evening. The Chargers, led by senior Duncan Szeliga's (Newmarket, N.H.) 22 points, are now 11-3 overall and 4-0 in conference play. The loss drops Curry to 4-11 overall and 1-3 in TCCC action.
The first half was owned by Szeliga as he scored the Chargers' first 11 points of the game giving Colby-Sawyer an 11-2 lead with four minutes gone by. Szeliga played 11 minutes in the first half saddled with two fouls, but finished the first stanza with 15 points on 7-10 shooting. The teams traded hoops for the remainder of the first half with Colby-Sawyer holding a steady lead. The Colonels trailed by 11 at the break while shooting 29%. Sophomore Michael D'Amato (Redding, Conn.) led Curry in the first 20 minutes with eight points. Sophomore Chris Bonadies (Medfield, Mass.) had four points and seven rebounds.
The Chargers continued to shoot lights out from the floor in the second half making 62% of their attempts. The Colonels hung tough early in the second half and cut the lead to nine points with 13 minutes to play, but could not get any closer. Curry also shot extremely well in the second frame making 56% of their shots and 6-14 from beyond the arc. The Chargers play in the paint was too much for the undersized front line of the Colonels where Colby-Sawyer held a 46-22 advantage.
The Colonels had three players finish the game with double-figures. Senior Quashed Simmons (Patterson, N.J.) had a team-leading 17 points including 9-9 from the charity stripe. D'Amato finished with 16 points. Freshman Gerald Cohen (Roxbury, Mass.) also poured in 16 points and grabbed six rebounds.
Szeliga finished with a game-high and season-high 22 points leading four Chargers in double-figurers. Junior Jon Chaloux (Barre, Vt.) shot 8-12 from the floor and finished with 20 points and four blocks. Senior Matt Lemieux (Manchester, N.H.) tallied 16 points and a game-high eight assists. Freshman Will Bardaglio (Wayne, Maine) rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 points. Junior Chris Cox (Barre, Vt.) had a solid game with nine points and six rebounds.
The Chargers travel to Nichols on Saturday, January 24 for a 1:00 p.m. tip time.
