NEW LONDON, N.H. – July 18, 2011 - The Colby-Sawyer College Chargers Club, which is the school's athletics booster club, held its 18th Annual Tennis Classic July 15-17, 2011 at the Patricia D. Kelsey Tennis Courts overlooking beautiful Mt. Kearsarge.
The tournament featured 72 players in a series of doubles events, which included A and B level tennis brackets that ensured players of similar abilities would be pitted against each other. Players came from New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont and even Florida to participate in this year's fundraising event.
Senior Men's B Finals: Dave Whitehouse (Rochester, N.H.) and Paul Violette (Dover, N.H.) defeated Karl Leskin (West Burke, Vt.) and Wendell Woodward - 6-1, 6-1.
Men's B Finals: Paul Noiseaux (South Pomfret, Vt.) and James Masters (Woodstock, Vt.) played a tough combination of David and Eric Miles to a tiebreak in the third set, but came away with the 6-7, 6-0, 10-4 victory.
Women's A Finals: Judy Fledderjohn (Sherborn, Mass.) and Lynn Austin-Tolley (Wilmot, N.H.) defeated a young alumni Colby-Sawyer team of Jen LaChance (Grantham, N.H.) and Hannah White (Stockbridge, Mass.) in a lively match 6-2, 6-4.
Mixed B Finals: Neil Fisk and Natsyo Fisk of Ellington, Conn. bested Paul Noiseaux (South Pomfret, Vt.) and Tommi Liquori (Woodstock, Vt.) in a very tight match - 6-3, 3-6, 10-3.
Men's A Finals: Colby-Sawyer alumni Ben Taylor (Grantham, N.H.) and Rob Barnes (Wayland, Mass.) played a phenomenal match to defeat George Wachtel (Naples, Fla.) and Bea Manning (New London, N.H.) - 7-5, 4-6, 10-3.
Senior Women's B Finals: The Goffstown, N.H. combination of Lynn Freidel and Linda Leibig outlasted a strong team of Nancy West (New London, N.H.) and Susan Leskin (West Burke, Vt.) - 7-6, 7-5.
Century Mixed Finals: A battle of the best ensued with David Miles and Emma Schmell (both of Woodstock, Vt.) defeating Ann Herriger and Steven Chase (both of Bradford, N.H.) 6-3, 6-4. Century mixed is the result of the players' ages equaling at least 100.
Mixed A Finals: This could have been a friendly Alumni Colby-Sawyer Team tennis match as Ben Taylor and Jen LaChance (both of Grantham, N.H.) defeated Hannah White (Stockbridge, Mass.) and Rob Barnes (Wayland, Mass.) in an amazing match - 6-4, 6-7, 10-7.
Women's B Finals: Rhonda Green (Boston, Mass.) and Janet Diesel (Braintree, Mass.) slid past Kara Berger (New London, N.H.) and Dot Diehl (Alexandria, N.H.) - 7-6, 6-2.
Senior Men's A Finals: The craft and creative play of Bob Wilkie (Sunapee, N.H.) and George Wachtel (Naples, Fla.) came through in a solid showing over B. Manning (New London, N.H.) and Tom Diehl (Alexandria, N.H.) - 7-6, 6-2.
The Chargers Club is Colby-Sawyer's athletic booster club which raises money to support the athletic program and directly benefits the student-athletes of the college.
