2010 Track & Field Season Review

The 2010 season featured a core group of upperclassmen and an extremely talented mix of freshmen and sophomores. The program continues to get great contributions from the underclassmen, which has led to the success of the Colby-Sawyer track and field squad over the past several years. Multiple school records were broken for the second straight season and 10 athletes qualified to compete at the New England Championships.

The New England Championships were held at Tufts University this year. Colby-Sawyer's 4x100 men's team comprised of sophomore Kevin Meleshuk (Reading, Mass.), sophomore Josh Commey (McLean, Va.), sophomore Derek Lautenschlager (Jericho, Vt.), and junior Matt Cole (Fiskdale, Mass.) clocked in at 45.43 for a 15th place finish.

Freshman Nick Rockwell (East Walpole, Mass.) broke his second school record this season at New England's. He had a distance of 42.82m in the discus throw to beat the previous mark of 40.36m set back in 2002 by Tommy Lavigne. He placed ninth in the event out of 29 competitors. Nick also qualified to compete in the javelin, but he failed to record a distance.

Freshman Anthony Sedita (Manchester, N.H.) had a distance of 42.10m in the javelin in his first New England Championships appearance.

Sophomore Kristin Sawyer (Walpole, Mass.) and freshman Melody Owens (Tyler, Texas) each made their first trip to New England's as they qualified for the shot put event earlier this season. The teammates tied for 22nd with each other by throwing the shot an identical 10.50m.

Freshman Danielle Perry (Charlestown, N.H.) and senior Caitlin Pond (Westborough, Mass.) each qualified for the Championships in the Heptathlon. Highlighting the events for Caitlin was a second place finish in the javelin (29.48m) and a seventh place in the shot put (9.30m). Perry's best event on the day was the 200 meter dash resulting in a third place finish out of 22 runners. She clocked in at 27.52.

Nick Rockwell had one of the best throwing seasons in recent history for the Chargers. In the first meet of the season at the Northeastern University Invitational, Nick broke a seven year old record in the hammer throw with a distance of 35.44m. On April 3 at the Mount Holyoke Invitational, Nick set a new mark in the hammer with 38.73 breaking the record he set two weeks prior. April 9 at the Eastern Connecticut Invitational, the season continued in the same fashion for Rockwell as he won the Shot Put, Discus and Hammer events. He posted a mark of 40.30m in the discus, which qualified him to compete in the New England Championships. Once again he set a new school record in the Hammer, shattering his previous mark with a distance of 41.61m. Rockwell qualified for New England's in the javelin with a mark of 51.20m at the TCCC Invitational.

Kristin Sawyer, new to the track & field program in 2010, placed second in the hammer throw with a mark of 33.17m at the Eastern Connecticut Invitational breaking the school record of 32.88m. The following day at the UNH Invitational, she showed her versatility as she qualified for the New England Championships in the shot put with a distance of 10.62m. The same meet, she improved on her school record throw in the hammer to 33.31m. At the conference meet (TCCC Invitational), Sawyer shined en route to a victory in the hammer event. She had her best throw of the season of 36.09m, smashing her school record she set two weeks prior.

Caitlin Pond and Danielle Perry earned the trip to New England's after qualifying in the Heptathlon at UNH on April 11. Pond recorded 2783 points over the weekend, while Perry recorded 2952 points to earn her trip to Tufts.

Melody Owens was the first Charger to qualify for New England's in the shot put this season with a distance of 11.03m at the UNH Invitational. She followed with a victory at the TCCC Invitational in the shot with a distance of 10.98m.

Anthony Sedita highlighted the TCCC meet for the Chargers by qualifying for the New England Championships in the javelin. He won the event with a distance of 52.27m.

Also at the TCCC Championships, Josh Commey won two events. He crossed the line in the 100 meter dash at 11.73 and followed with a time of 23.38 en route to the 200 meter dash victory. Junior Tyler Murdoch (Lyme, N.H.) also came away with a victory in the high jump with a mark of 1.78m.

The women's 4x100 relay team of Pond, Perry, junior Amber Cronin (Buxton, Maine) and freshman Ryan Prothro (East Sandwich, Mass.) finished second at the TCCC Invitational in a time of 53.61.

Other members of the women's track and field team that contributed to the program this year include, freshman Aimee Burgess (North Yarmouth, Maine), sophomore Sisa Castro (Ecuador), junior Casey Monahan (Wakefield, Mass.), freshman Jessica Ruch (Lancaster, N.H.), sophomore Kellie Valentine (West Lebanon, N.H.), freshman Heather-Jo Wallace (Goffstown, N.H.).
