Baseball Splits With Eastern Nazarene

QUINCY, Mass. - April 20, 2010-
The Colby-Sawyer baseball team split their TCCC double header with Eastern Nazarene. The Chargers won the first game 7-5 and dropped game two 9-3. The split moves the Chargers' record to 14-16 (9-11 TCCC) while Eastern Nazarene moves to 15-18 (8-12 TCCC).

Game 1
The Colby Sawyer Chargers took game one of the double header due to a five run fifth while #Mike Bertuccio# (Millstone Township, NJ) had the complete game win in the 7-5 victory. P Justin Denbow (Readfield, ME) took the loss for the Lions.

The first run of the game came in the third when the Chargers' #Chris Hartery# (Billerica, MA) doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He scored on an error by the right fielder to put the Chargers up on the score board first, 1-0.

ENC answered in the 4th inning however as Steve Oehlschlager (Dallas, TX) landed a base hit and advanced to third for Luke Matthews (Boise, ID) to single him home and tie the game at 1-1.

The Chargers broke through for five runs in the 5th. With two runners on, Hartery emptied the bases with a a 3 run homer. Then, with runners on second and third, Matthew Corvo (Stratton Mountain, VT) drove in #Matt Muldoon# (Malden, MA) for the fourth run and #Kevin Emerson# (Hinesburg, VT) scored the fifth and final run of the inning on a double steal to make the score 6-1.

ENC came back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth when Joel Torres (Bronx, NY) hit a three run home run to cut into the Chargers' lead, 6-4.

But in the top of the sixth the Chargers tacked on another run with a sacrifice fly that scored #Shane Hoagboon# (Mayfield, NY) to lead 7-4.

The Lions tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh but came up short as they were only able to scratch just one run across when Dave Rivera (Bronx, NY) scored from third on a ground out.

Having an outstanding game at the plate was Colby-Sawyer's Hartery went 3 for 4 fiwth 4 RBI's and 2 runs scored. Bertuccio allowed 9 hits over 7 innings while striking out 5 and walking 2.

For the Lions, Danny Rodriquez went 2 for 3 with a RBI and a walk as Denbow is credited with the loss on the mound as he gave up 8 hits and 2 walks while striking out 7.


Game 2

In game two of the double header P Jared Daniels (Smithsburg, MD) took the mound for the Lions against the Chargers' P #Brendan Harding# (Medford, MA). The Lions beat the Chargers with an offensive explosion that was highlighted by Nate Leaser's (Solano Beach, CA) grand slam that secured the 9-3 win for the Lions.

The Lions struck early in the first inning when Johan Villalona (Bronx, NY) hit into a fielder's choice that drove in Joel Torres (Bronx, NY) from third, and the Lions led heading into the second, 1-0. The Lions offense continued in the 2nd, when Brendan Dauo (Bronx, NY) singled to drive in Leaser for the Lions second run of the game.

The Chargers drove in their first run in the top of the third when Ryan Ferris (Nashua, NH) scored from second on a single by #Shane Hoagboon# (Mayfield, NY).

In the bottom half of the inning, ENC's Danny Rodriguez (Bronx, NY) drew a two out walk and was advanced by a first pitch single by Villalona. A balk advanced the runners to second and third where Luke Matthews (Boise, ID) took advantage of the situation by hitting a 2 RBI single to double the Lions lead, 4-1.

In the top of the fifth, the Chargers put runners on first and second with a single and a hit batsman. #Tyler Stotz# (Amesbury, MA) then drove in their second run of the game with a single to cut the Lions lead in half, 4-2.

The Lions got the offense going again in the fifth as they loaded the bases and no outs while Nate Leaser stepped to the plate. Leaser locked on to a 0-1 pitch and shot it over the deep center field fence for a grand slam to blow the game open 8-2. Then Dauo kept the inning going when he drew a two out walk, and scored when Anthony Melendez (Yonkers, NY) hit a triple into the right center gap to put the Lions up 9-2.

The Chargers tried to answer in the top of the six as they loaded the bases but Lions reliever Jonathon Ovalles (Bronx, NY) denied the threat by striking out the last batter.

Ovalles returned in the 7th and surrendered a run before getting the final batter to fly out to center.

Leaser led the Lions assault going 2-3 with 4 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Stotz led the Chargers with 2RBIs on 3 hits.

ENC's Jared Daniels goes to 3-1 on the season as he spread out 5 hits over 5.1 innings of work while striking out 4 and walking 2. CSC's Harding get the loss on 4 innings of work, allowing 6 hits, walking 2 and striking out 1.

The win puts the Lions at 15-18 (8-12 TCCC) on the season, and dropped the Chargers to 14-16 (9-11 TCCC)

Colby Sawyer faces Endicott at home on Thursday. First pitch is set for 2:00 pm.
