NEW LONDON, N.H. – April 11, 2010 – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team fell to Western New England in both ends of a twin bill at Kelsey Field on Sunday. The Golden Bears took game one 10-1 and followed with a 12-5 victory in game two.
Western New England improves to 21-6 overall and 12-4 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC). Colby-Sawyer dips to 11-13 overall and 6-8 in TCCC action.
The Golden Bears exploded for nine runs in the third inning of game one and received five shutout innings from starting pitcher junior Evan Michaud (Windsor Locks, Conn.). He recorded six strikeouts, while surrendering only four hits.
Senior Justin Walz (Groton, Conn.) led Western New England with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate including two runs scored and two runs batted in. Junior Tony Trubia (Tolland, Conn.) went 2-for-2 with a sacrifice fly and knocked in a run in each plate appearance.
Juniors Andrew Fatse (Hampden, Mass.) and Ryan Dudzinski (Bristol, Conn.) added two hits apiece.
Senior
Chris Hartery (Billerica, Mass.) had two of Colby-Sawyer's six hits including his fifth triple of the season.
In game two, the Golden Bears did most of their damage again in the third inning scoring seven of their 10 runs.
Senior Joe Griglun (Southington, Conn.) had three hits in four at-bats scoring two runs and knocking one in. Sophomore Joe Bouvier (East Longmeadow, Mass.) also had three hits and two runs scored. Fatse went 2-for-2 with a team best four RBI.
The Chargers were led by junior
Shane Hoagboon (Mayfield, N.Y.) who had two doubles in four at-bats. He scored twice and drove in one. Sophomore
Greg Mehuron (Waitsfield, Vt.) knocked in two runs with a single in the fifth inning.
Freshman Kevin Jefferis (Chesire, Conn.) improved to 5-0 on the season for Western New England. He went four innings giving up three earned runs. Sophomore Mike Lawlor (Windsor, Conn.) picked up his fifth save with three quality innings of no run relief.
The Chargers will wrap-up a four game home stand on Wednesday with a 2:00pm doubleheader with New England College. Western New England will host Keene State on Wednesday for a non-conference tilt at 3:30pm.
