2009 Women's Soccer Recap

The 2009 Colby-Sawyer College women's soccer team was one of the youngest teams in recent history. The Chargers sported a roster of 12 freshmen and seven sophomores. However, the youth proved to be the base for the 2009 squad and laid the foundation for the future of the program.

The Chargers began the 2009 campaign with an impressive 4-1-2 record including six shutouts. The one setback was the opening match versus Worcester State. After the loss, the Chargers went on to outscore their opponents 10-0 in the next six games.

The first victory of the season came against Green Mountain College where the Chargers youth began to set the pace for the season. Freshmen midfielders Laurel Bauer (Bradford, N.H.) and Sarah Lavalle (Newton, Mass.) each scored their first goals of their collegiate careers and guided Colby-Sawyer to a 2-0 win over the host Eagles. Freshman midfielder Melissa Hynds (Derry, N.H.) and senior Laura Sansoucie (Haverhill, Mass.) each added an assist in the victory.

After a scoreless tie with Castleton College, the Chargers returned to New London for their home opener versus Lasell College. Freshman forward Ashley Reis (Peterborough, N.H.) scored her first collegiate goal as a Charger and sophomore forward Abby Wills (Uxbridge, Mass.) added her first goal of the season en route to a 2-0 Colby-Sawyer win.

The Chargers' offense started firing on all cylinders as the team opened conference play versus Anna Maria College. For the third time of the season, the youth of the Chargers led the team to victory. In a 5-0 win, four different players scored goals. Sophomore Liz Allen (Holden, Mass.) led the rout with two goals. Sophomore Sam Rober (Holden, Mass.) added her first goal of the season, while freshmen Sarah Lavalle and Ashley Reis each netted their second goals of the season. Laura Sansoucie dished out two assists and freshman Emily Brown (Rye, N.H.) added her first collegiate assist in the victory.

The winning ways continued for Colby-Sawyer when they hosted intrastate rival Plymouth State University. With the Chargers youth leading the way once again, the team battled to a hard fought 1-0 victory over the Panthers. Emily Brown scored her first collegiate goal as the Chargers went on for the win.

In the second conference match of the season, the Chargers' offense was stunted, but a stingy defense and solid goaltending by sophomore Allie Piper (Barre, Vt.) helped the team fight to a 0-0 tie. The game marked the sixth straight game the Chargers did not allow an opponent goal. Net tenders, Allie Piper and freshman Shalyn Spencer (Natick, Mass.) split the goal tending duties over the six-game stretch.

After a 1-1 tie with Curry College and a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Roger Williams, the Chargers returned to their winning ways with a thrilling 1-0 victory over Gordon College. Liz Allen netted the game's only goal, while Abby Willis dished out the assist and Allie Piper made seven saves in the conference win.

Allie Piper continued her dominance in net as the Chargers traveled to Regis College. For the sixth time on the season, Piper record a shutout as Colby-Sawyer went on to a 2-0 victory over the Pride. Abby Wills and senior Meghan Fligg (Osterville, Mass.) netted the games two goals and junior Liz Williams (Norwell, Mass.) had the lone assist of the match.

For the third straight game the Chargers found the win column as they defeated Eastern Nazarene College 3-1. Freshmen Sarah Lavalle and Laurel Bauer each had goals and senior Laura Sansoucie netted her first goal of the season as well as added an assist. Liz Williams dished out two assists on the day as the Chargers moved to 7-3-3 overall and 4-2-2 in conference play.

The victory over Eastern Nazarene was the last win of the season as the Chargers fell a goal short in four of their final five matches, including a 1-0 loss to the University of New England, a 3-2 loss to Salve Regina, a 2-1 overtime loss to Wentworth, a 2-0 loss to Endicott and a 1-0 loss to Nichols. Colby-Sawyer finished in 10th place in the conference with a 4-7-2 TCCC record and an overall record of 7-8-3. The 10th place finish mark the first time in five years the women's soccer team did not make the conference tournament.

The year proved to be very productive as the Charger's youth gained valuable experience and playing time. The freshmen class combined for 11 of the teams 21 goals on the season. Ashley Reis led the team with four goals on the year and finished with eight points, which was second on the team. Freshman Laurel Bauer had three goals, while fellow freshmen Emily Brown and Sarah Lavalle added two goals each.

The team was led in points by senior midfielder Laura Sansoucie. She finished the season with three goals and four assists for a total of ten points. Senior teammates Meghan Fligg and Eileen Endyke (Derry, N.H.) each played in all 18 matches with Fligg netting one goal and Endyke getting an All-TCCC Honorable Mention nod.

Junior defenseman Liz Williams dished out three assists. Junior's Erinn Ring (Worcester, Mass.) and Katherine Lee (Clinton, N.Y.) each helped the Charger's with experience and depth. Ring saw action in three matches and Lee in six.

Sophomores Allie Piper, Liz Allen, Abby Wills, Sam Rober, and Andi Logan (Eliot, Maine) continued their successful careers at Colby-Sawyer. Piper saw action in 13 of the 18 matches, posted 61 saves and earned six shutouts. Allen netted three goals and an assist, Wills added two goals and two assists and Rober had a goal and an assist on the season. Logan, who played in all 18 matches, was a defensive staple for the Chargers.

Sophomore's Aly Finn (Center Harbor, N.H.) and Kim Shaughnessy (Bedford, N.H.) each saw action in five matches.

Freshmen Katie Carreiro (Cumberland, R.I.), Sammi Lehr (Cohasset, Mass.), Shalyn Spencer were valued additions to the Chargers' lineup. Carreiro saw action in all 18 matches at the midfield position and Lehr's size and aggressive play helped add a new facet to the Charger's defense. Spencer made six appearances in goal and posted two shutouts with 30 saves.

Freshmen Melissa Hynds, Colleen Coburn (Middletown, Conn.), Elizabeth Malenfant (Siasconset, Mass.), Heather-Jo Wallace (Goffstown, N.H.) and Ekta Sampson (Hyde Park, Vt.) all made several appearances for the Chargers.
