Nineteen Chargers Named to TCCC All-Academic Teams
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - May 31, 2009 – Nineteen Colby-Sawyer athletes were named to the Academic All-Conference Team, as announced by The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Commissioner Gregg Kaye. A total of 362 student-athletes were honored and all 14 institutions in The Commonwealth Coast Conference were represented on the Academic All-Conference Team.
The Academic All-Conference Team consists of any starter or significant reserve who has attained at least sophomore status and has maintained an overall minimum GPA of 3.50 on a scale of 4.00. Only members of sports teams in which the conference sponsors a championship are eligible for this team.
Baseball
Sophomore Evan Leary (Concord, N.H.) played in all 39 games while starting in 38 in his first season with the Chargers. He recorded 35 hits, which was sixth best on the team, and scored the fourth most runs with 32. Leary had the third best fielding percentage on the team (.987) as he patrolled centerfield throughout the season.
Men's Basketball
Junior Andrew Ferreira (New London, N.H.) played in 27 of the team's 28 games in his first full season with the Chargers. He averaged 10.6 minutes per game and was fourth on the team with 25 steals. He scored a season-high 15 points in 19 minutes on 1/17/09 in a win over Anna Maria.
Women's Basketball
Junior Amy Hebert (Keene, N.H.) appeared in all 26 games for the Chargers during the 2008-2009 season. She was named to the All-Academic team last year as well. She averaged 3.5 points and 2.2 rebounds per game. Hebert scored a season-high 17 points on 7-8 shooting in a 69-38 win at Gordon on 2/10/09.
Sophomore Katelyn Stravinsky (Norwell, Mass.) started in nine of the 16 games she played in this season. She averaged 3.9 points per game and shot 75% from the free throw line. Stravinsky scored a career-high 15 points on 6-9 shooting in a 77-59 victory over NEC on 1/13/09.
Women's Lacrosse
Sophomore Alicia Foss (Hardwick, Vt.) started 12 games in goal for the Chargers, playing 700 minutes. Foss finished her three-year career with 248 saves, which ranks her seventh all-time in career saves. Foss also was named to the All-Academic team in 2008.
Sophomore Katherine Lee (Clinton, N.Y.) finished the season with nine points including four goals and five assists. She started in all 14 games and recorded a season-high two assists against Gordon.
Sophomore Deb MacEachern (Billerica, Mass.) played and started in all 14 games in 2009. She was third on the team with 28 groundballs and 15 caused turnovers. MacEachern recorded a goal, an assist, and a season-high six groundballs against Anna Maria.
Men's Soccer
Senior Pat Benson (Essex, Vt.) started in 71 career games as one of the top defensive players in the program's history. In 2008, Benson anchored a defense that recorded four shutouts. Earlier this year, Benson was named TCCC Men's Soccer Senior Scholar-Athlete, Colby-Sawyer Male Senior Scholar-Athlete and named to the Scholar All-East Region Honorable Mention Team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
Sophomore Jeff Cote (Saco, Maine) appeared in 12 games in 2008 as he patrolled the midfield.
Women's Soccer
Senior Elise Kapp (Yarmouth Port, Mass.) led the Chargers in goals (10), game-winners (3), and total points (26). As one of the team's captains, she ranked eighth in the conference in total points and tied for seventh in both goals and assists. Kapp closed out her four year career tied for second on the all-time career goals list, third on the all-time career points list, and fourth on the all-time career assists list. Kapp was a Second Team All-TCCC selection and was awarded the conference Senior Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Sophomore Katherine Lee (Clinton, N.Y.) had a solid second season for the Chargers scoring two goals, including a game-winner versus Green Mountain. She played in 18 matches and started eight of them.
Men's Swimming & Diving
Senior John DeGray (Wethersfield, Conn.) had a record breaking season for the swim team. He set school records this season in the 400 IM (4:33.05), 1000 freestyle (10:41.66) and 1650 freestyle (17:46.60). He also was part of two relay teams, which set school records in the 400 and 800 freestyle races.
Junior Ryan Martin (Chester, N.H.) was a co-captain on the 2008-2009 squad and broke school records in the 500 freestyle and the 400 freestyle relay.
Junior Dave Mikita (Ansonia, Conn.) competed in the one meter and three meter diving events throughout the year. Highlighting his multiple victories during the season was a first place finish at the TCCC Invitational on December 5.
Women's Swimming & Diving
Senior Kara Walker (Westford, Vt.) was a member of the swim team for all four years. She competed in the butterfly and freestyle events and she proved to be very competitive in both.
Women's Tennis
Junior Jen LaChance (Killingworth, Conn.) had one of the greatest individual seasons in school history as she was recognized by being selected to All-TCCC Doubles First Team and All-TCCC Singles Second Team. LaChance earned an overall record of 14-1 in singles play and has 43 career singles victories ranking her fourth on the all-time list. On October 23, LaChance broke the school's all-time career doubles victories record and now has 41 for her career.
Sophomore Hannah White (Stockbridge, Mass.) was also named to the All-TCCC Doubles First Team with partner LaChance. Along with White's dominating performances in doubles, she earned All-TCCC Singles Honorable Mention honors with a 12-3 overall record. White spent time in the No. 2 flight, generating a 5-1 record and a 7-2 record at the No. 3 flight.
Men's Track & Field
Sophomore Jeff Cote (Saco, Maine) competed in the steeplechase throughout the season for the track team.
Women's Track & Field
Sophomore Amber Cronin (Buxton, Maine) qualified for the New England Championships with a 1.50m distance in the high jump at the Bryant Invitational on March 28. Cronin continued her success in the high jump throughout the season, including a 1.55m distance on April 18 at the Springfield Invitational and April 25 at the TCCC Invitational, which tied the school record she set in 2008.
Senior Ashley Jackson (Athol, Mass.) specialized in long distance races in her senior season. She recorded a season's best time of 22:05.65 in the 5000m at the Bryant Invitational. She also ran the 1500m and 110m hurdles events.
Volleyball
Senior Taylor Forsberg (Moultonborough, N.H.) had another solid defensive season for the Chargers, leading the team with 455 digs, an averaged of 3.64 digs a set. Forsberg climbed the all-time digs career ladder, finishing in second place with 1,581 digs. She was named to the All-TCCC Second Team as a Libero. Forsberg also was recognized by the conference when she received the Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award.
