NEW LONDON, N.H. - April 25, 2009 - The Colby-Sawyer baseball team swept the Crusaders of Eastern Nazarene in the team's final TCCC regular season doubleheader. The Chargers trailed 12-5 in the seventh inning of game one before scoring eight times in the bottom half to earn the 13-12 walk off victory. Colby-Sawyer won game two easily, 16-4. With the wins, the Chargers earn the final spot in the TCCC playoffs and will play at Curry on Tuesday, April 28.
Trailing 4-0 after two innings, the Chargers nudged their way back into the game with a run in the third and two in the fourth. The Crusaders answered with three runs over the next two innings to take a 7-3 lead. Eastern Nazarene thought they had put the game out of reach after scoring five in the top of the seventh to increase their lead to 12-5. However, the Chargers were not finished and made a miraculous comeback in the bottom of the seventh, scoring eight runs to earn the walk off victory.
Senior Tom White (Lisbon, N.H.) led all players with five RBI on a 2-for-4 effort. Five other Chargers recorded at least one RBI. Freshmen Ryan Lawless (Charlemont, Mass.) and Greg Mehuron (Waitsfield, Vt.) each scored three runs.
Game two started in a similar fashion to game one with the Crusaders jumping on the Chargers' pitching staff early. Eastern Nazarene scored all four of their runs in the first two frames, but the Chargers regained the lead in the bottom half of the second when they put a four spot on the board.
Colby-Sawyer held on to the lead the rest of the way and poured on nine more runs over the final three innings to earn the 16-4 victory in game two.
White followed his game one performance with a 3-for-5 effort with two RBI and four runs scored. Junior Chris Hartery (Billerica, Mass.) was perfect at the dish with two hits, three RBI and three runs scored. Senior Chris Gaeta (Lynn, Mass.) celebrated senior day going 3-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored. Freshman Justin Martin (Lebanon, N.H.) knocked in three runs while junior Jarrett Lowe (Sudbury, Mass.) had two RBI.
Freshman Ryan Gillan (Alton, N.H.) pitched a complete game surrendering three earned runs en route to the victory.
The Chargers host Worcester State on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. for a final tune-up prior to the TCCC tournament.
