Barry Schoonmaker enters year number 16 at Colby-Sawyer as both the men's and women's tennis head coach in 2024-25.
Men's Tennis
Schoonmaker was named the 2013, 2016, 2018 NAC Coach of the Year and the 2019, 2023, and 2024 GNAC Coach of the Year. Barry has won seven NAC East Division Titles, six NAC Crossover Championships and has made six NCAA Tournament Appearances over his tenure.
In the spring of 2022, 2023 and 2024, Schoonmaker guided the Chargers to the GNAC Championship, where the team fell to Eastern Nazarene College in each of the three years.
The men's tennis program will now transition to the CCC ahead of 2024-25.
Women's Tennis
Schoonmaker has been very successful in New London as he was named the 2012, 2014, 2016 NEAC Coach of the year and the 2021 and 2023 GNAC Coach of the Year. Barry has won ten conference championships and subsequent NCAA Tournament appearances. The team won NCAA Tournament first round matches in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2023.
In 2023-24 Schoonmaker led the Chargers to a 10-8 overall record and a third-consecutive GNAC Championship. The Chargers would fall in the NCAA tournament to Middlebury to end the season on May 10th.
In 2022-23 Schoonmaker led the Chargers to a 13-8 overall record and another GNAC Championship. Colby-Sawyer would end the year with a perfect 6-0 conference record, while also winning a round in the NCAA tournament against UMass Boston by a 5-2 final on May 5th.
In 2021-22 Schoonmaker guided the Chargers to a 16-7 overall record and a GNAC Championship. For his efforts Schonmaker was named the GNAC Coach of the Year as the Chargers went 6-0 in the GNAC en route to the conference title.
Prior to Colby-Sawyer, Schoonmaker spent fourteen years as the head men's tennis coach at Cornell University, guided the Big Red to ten straight winning seasons and five national rankings in 2001, 2002, 2004, 2006, and 2007.
Prior to his tenure at Cornell, Schoonmaker was head tennis coach at Siena College from 1986-91 and assistant manager and assistant tennis pro at Southwood Tennis Club (Albany, NY) from 1986-89. He also served as the head tennis pro at Colonie Country Club (Voorheesville, NY) from 1987-93.
A 1986 graduate of Houghton College in Houghton, NY, Schoonmaker earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration. He is a USPTR certified pro and a USRSA certified racket stringer.
