George Martin

Head Coach George Martin completed his 26th season, in 2019-20, at the helm of the Colby-Sawyer women’s basketball program.

Coach Martin has grown the Colby-Sawyer program into one of the premier programs in New England with his aggressive defenses and well-balanced offensive attacks. He is the winningest women's basketball coach in New Hampshire.

Last season, the team made its 27th straight postseason appearance.

Under Coach Martin’s guidance, the Chargers have competed in the NCAA Tournament or Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament in 14 of the last 24 seasons. The Chargers have also recorded double-digit wins in conference play in 22 of the past 25 seasons.

Coach Martin’s success has not gone unnoticed, as he has been chosen as NAC Coach of the Year once and TCCC Coach of the Year four times during his tenure at Colby-Sawyer. Martin reached the 300 win plateau on February 21, 2009, as the Chargers defeated Western New England, 54-47. He recorded his 400th career victory with a 90-34 victory over Thomas College on January 30, 2015. He has compiled a career mark of 487-221 in his 26 years at Colby-Sawyer.

Martin led the Chargers to three consecutive TCCC championships in 1997, 1998 and 1999, and earned the league’s NCAA Tournament bid each year. During the 1998-99 season, his team set the program’s single-season victory total (25-4), including a 14-0 showing in the conference, and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament. The 1998-1999 team was inducted into the Colby-Sawyer Athletic Hall of Fame in October of 2009.

After the 2007-08 season, Martin was honored with being a part of Women’s Basketball’s Finest, a publication produced by the NCAA in conjunction with the 25th anniversary of women’s athletics. Martin qualified for the publication by posting a winning percentage of at least .700 (Martin’s winning percentage currently rests at .688) and earning at least 150 wins (Martin has 487), plus he has coached for at least 10 years in the NCAA.

Under Martin, the Chargers have posted a 195-34 record in The Commonwealth Coast Conference from 1995 to 2010. In the seven years as a member of the North Atlantic Conference, Colby-Sawyer went 95-31. Colby-Sawyer has spent two years in the GNAC and is 13-10.

In addition to his basketball coaching duties, he has also guided the women’s volleyball team on different occasions. Most recently, Martin coached the 2008 Colby-Sawyer women’s volleyball team to a Runner-up finish in the TCCC Tournament and an ECAC appearance. He previously coached the team from 1994 to 2000, earning a pair of conference Coach of the Year awards. He led the Chargers volleyball team to it’s first-ever league title in 1999, and to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history, advancing to the second round.

Coach Martin came to Colby-Sawyer after spending two years as an assistant coach with the Wagner College Women’s Basketball Program. He previously worked at Fitchburg State for five seasons as an assistant coach and three years as the director of the school’s intramural programs. He graduated from Springfield College in 1982, with a B.S. degree in physical education and earned a Master’s Degree in education from Wagner in 1994.
