NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team headed to New York for a tri-match to kick off the 2025 season against New Jersey City University and John Jay University. The Chargers would draw 5 sets against the Knights and draw 4 sets against the Bloodhounds who made the NCAA tournament last year.
Rapid Recap Game 1:
- The Chargers would go down 7-1 to start the first set, but would quickly make the set close, closing the lead to 12-10. Alexis Mandrino (Dunbarton, N.H.) would record two service aces in the Chargers run, while Brenna Pliier (Simsbury, Conn.) would record a block as well. The Chargers would go on to take a brief lead with a couple kills by Piller and a kill by Claire Rocky (Sherman, Conn.). The Chargers would keep it close, but a couple kills by the Knights Kai Fitzpatrick would end the set 25-23
- The Chargers would keep the second set even closer as they took a 10-8 lead halfway through the set, capitalizing on the Knights errors. Aijah Thoroughgood (Center Barnstead, N.H.) would get two service aces a couple points later to help the Chargers take control of the set. Piller would end the second set with two service aces to make it a 1-1 game.
- The third set was all Chargers, as they opened up on a 9-2 run. Brooke Tasker (Wolfeboro, N.H.) and Addison Sasnett (Virginia Beach, VA) would both record two kills each to help take the controlling lead. Piller and Tasker would record more kills later in the third set to take a 2-1 lead after winning the set 25-20.
- The fourth and fifth sets were both controlled by the Knights as the Chargers would fall 12-4 early through the fourth set. The Chargers would try to crawl back on a Sasnett kill and Madison Sinatro (Simsbury, Conn.) service ace. The Knights errors and Chargers effort almost got the team back into the fourth set, but would eventually fall 25-18, setting up a fifth and final set. The Knights would take an early lead in the fifth set to beat the Charger 3-2.
Inside the Numbers:
- Piller would lead the Chargers with 12 kills, with the first year Addison Sasnett recording 6 kills with 17 digs. Brooke Tasker would follow suite with 5 kills, with 3 block assists. Bree Bacon (Brookline, Mass.) would lead the way for the Chargers in assists with 23. Alexis Mandrino would lead the team in service aces as she finished with 4.
Rapid Recap Game 2:
- The Chargers would take on a 2024 NCAA tournament team in the John Jay Bloodhounds. The Chargers would take set one from the Bloodhounds 25-23 after going back and forth throughout the set. The Chargers would score 8 in a row to take a 20-16 lead with a kill each by Rocky and Tasker, and some Bloodhound errors. Tasker and Sasnett would help end the set for the Chargers with a couple kills.
- The Bloodhounds would win the next three sets, but the Chargers would not go down without a fight. Nina Bongiovanni would lead the way for the Bloodhounds as she took over halfway with a couple kills and service aces. The Bloodhounds would run away with the second set with service aces from Jadyn Orava.Â
- The Chargers would keep it closer in the third and fourth sets, but the Bloodhounds would edge them out. Tasker, Sasnett, and Piller would record a couple kills throughout the two sets to help keep the Chargers in the game. The Chargers would eventually fall 3-1 in a very hard fought match.
Inside the Numbers:Â
- Brooke Tasker and Addison Sasnett would have 8 and 7 kills respectively to lead the way for the Chargers. Bree Bacon would lead the way for the team in assists again as she would record 21 while also picking up 12 digs. Madison Sinatro would pick up 13 digs to lead the Chargers on the defensive end. Claire Rocky would add three blocks assists to lead the blocking.Â
