Chargers Late Rally Falls Short in GNAC Quarterfinal Round

Providence, R.I. - The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse fell in the quarterfinal round of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tournament to Johnson & Wales University 9-8.  
 
Rapid Recap: 
  • Senior Heather Hanson (Barnstable, Mass.) would open the scoring for the visiting Chargers netting a goal in the first minute of action. A minute later, the Wildcats would respond with a goal of their own to even the score at 1-1. The teams would continue to trade turnovers back and forth and a yellow card committed by the Chargers would allow the Wildcats to take a 2-1 lead. The teams would continue to battle throughout the quarter as the Wildcats would take the 2-1 lead at the end of the quarter.  
  • The Wildcats would take advantage of a draw control by Neely Connor to extend their lead to 3-1. The Chargers responded minutes later as Hanson would score her second goal of the game to trim the lead to 3-2. The Chargers would take advantage of a draw control by senior Soph Kuhlthau (Cheshire, Conn.), leading to a free position attempt where Hanson would net her third goal of the game to tie the score at 3-3. The Chargers would keep the pressure on the Wildcats as sophomore Rose Finlayson (Hopkinton, N.H.) would cause a Wildcat turnover and found the back of the net to give the Chargers the 4-3 lead. The teams would continue to battle late in the quarter, trading turnovers, as the Wildcats took advantage of a failed clear attempt by the Chargers to score a goal, tying the score at 4-4 heading into halftime. 
  • The Wildcats would score first in the third quarter, but the Chargers continued to battle and seconds later Hanson would score her fourth scored a goal to tie the game at 5-5. The Wildcats would respond with a goal of their own off of a free position to take a 6-5 lead with 10:39 remaining in the quarter.  The Wildcats took advantage of Charger turnovers as Madeleine Gould would extend the home team's lead to 7-5. The teams would continue to battle as Kuhlthau would score a goal to trim the lead to 7-6 as the quarter came to a close. 
  • Junior Elena Bronson (Monkton, Vt.) would take advantage of a free position to tie the score at 7-7 early in the final quarter of action. The Wildcats took advantage of a turnover by the visitors as Neely Connor would net her second goal of the came to take the 8-7 lead with 10:27 remaining. The Wildcats would take advantage of a yellow card committed by the Chargers as Madeleine Gould recorded her fifth goal to give the Wildcats a 9-7 lead with under four minutes remaining. Finlayson would take advantage of a green card committed by the Wildcats and found the back of the net with the assist from Hanson to trim the lead to 9-8 with 1:31 remaining. The Chargers would continue to fight and were unable to score in the final minute as the Wildcats would secure the 9-8 victory.  
 
Inside the Numbers: 
  • Hanson paced the Chargers with four goals, one assist, and four draw controls while Finlayson added two goals, three groundballs and two draw controls. Kuhlthau tallied one goal, one assist, five groundballs, and three draw controls for the Chargers.  
  • Junior Cecilia Ponzini (Windham, N.H.) recorded four groundballs, one caused turnover, and three draw controls while first-year Brooke Farquhar (Gorham, N.H.) tallied three groundballs.  
  • Senior AJ Paton (Exeter, N.H.) picked up the loss in net and recorded four saves for the Chargers.
