CHARGERS OUTLAST PILGRIMS 3-2

NEW LONDON, N.H.  – The Colby-Sawyer women's soccer team picked up a 3-2 win over in-state rival New England College at home Wednesday afternoon.

Rapid Recap:
  • The Chargers began the game with early pressure, with shots from seniors Halle Pletzer (Barre, Vt.) and Bridget O'Connell (Peabody, Mass.) to keep the home on the attack. Pletzer found the back of the net in the 25th minute to give the Chargers a 1-0 lead. The Pilgrims responded four minutes later with a goal of their own to tie things up heading into the half.
  • The Chargers would get a second goal off of an error by the visiting Pilgrims to give them the 2-1 lead early in the second half. New England College responded minutes later, finding the back of the net once again to tie the game up. A late foul in the second half gave the Chargers the advantage with O'Connell stepping up to take the penalty kick and sending the ball right past the keeper to give the home team a 3-2 advantage. The Chargers continued to stay on the offensive with shots from senior Hannah Brown (Pembroke, N.H.) and junior Lauren McKee (Littleton, N.H.). The Pilgrims rallied back to extend the offensive pressure late in the second half, but first-year Nicole Morello (Wilmington, Mass.) shut down all opportunities with saves to solidify the 3-2 victory at home.

Post-Game Press:
"Today's game was challenging for us, but it was great to out of it with a win," said first-year Nicole Morello (Wilmington, Mass.). "Gabby, Aurora and myself have really been putting in the work at our goalkeeper sessions and push each other to be the best we can possibly be! The team is now gearing up for an away game at Anna Maria College this weekend and are just taking it one game at a time."

Inside The Numbers:
  • The Chargers outshot the Pilgrims 21-12.
  • O'Connell and Pletzer led the offense with a goal apiece.
