CHARGERS SWEEP VERMONT STATE CASTLETON 3-0

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer College women's volleyball team picked up a big win Tuesday night defeating Vermont State Castleton in three sets (25-13, 25-20, 23-21).
Rapid Recap:
  • The Chargers came out ready to fight in the first set with sophomore Brenna Piller (Simsbury, Conn.) recording her first kill of the game. The team quickly extended their lead powered by kills from seniors Katie Mollberg (Naples, Fla.) and Brooke Patnode (Weare, N.H.), pushing ahead 7-6. The Chargers extended their lead to 15-11 with kills from first-year Kamryn Brakemeier (Fort Worth, Texas) and Piller and never let off the gas to come away with a first-set victory.
  • The Spartans continued to fight early in the second set taking a 3-1 lead. Senior Audra Fontes (Fresno, Calif.) turned the momentum with a service ace to put the Chargers back in front. The Spartans continued their fighting ways tying the match at 20-20, but the Chargers responded with back-to-back kills from first-year Leah Barlow (Bourne, Mass.) and Mollberg to give the Chargers the second-set victory.
  • The Chargers continued to dominate the third set taking a convincing 9-4 lead with kills from Piller and Brakemeier, but the Spartans were able to chip away at the lead tying the match up at 12-12. The teams traded points back and forth late in the third set, but the tenacity and fight from the Chargers proved too much for the Spartans as the Chargers closed the third set with a victory to complete the sweep.
Post Game Press:
"I think we really came together this game and our hitters made a lot of great connections with our setter," said senior Audra Fontes (Fresno, Calif.). "The defense was working hard and the hitters were really just putting balls down for us!"
