NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team is moving on to the pod championships on Sunday defeating Saint Joseph's (Maine) by a 12-8 final. First year
Sean Roeger (Salem, N.H.) led the way going 4-for-5 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored.
Rapid Recap:
- The Chargers jumped ahead early yet again getting a pair of runs in the first inning. It started with an RBI double by sophomore Mike McLeer (Saco, Maine) to score graduate student Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.) who doubled to get on. Roeger added the second run with a RBI single to plate McLeer. In the second inning three more runs crossed for the Chargers to give Colby-Sawyer a 5-0 advantage. Sophomore Cam Carignan (Rutland, Mass.) kicked it off with a double to right field to score two runners before O'Brien brought home Carignan. The Monks plated four runs of their own in the bottom half of the second inning all with two outs. Two doubles and a single got home the four runs as the Chargers led 5-4 headed into the middle innings.
- The Monks jumped in front in the bottom of the fourth inning by a 6-5 margin on a RBI single and a sacrifice fly, but Colby-Sawyer stormed back putting up four runs in the top half of the fifth inning. It started with a first year Evan Dennis (East Ryegate, Vt.) RBI on a fielder's choice, followed up by an RBI single by sophomore Devin Montalvo (Coram, N.Y.). Dennis would eventually score on a wild pitch and first year Noah Staffier (Beverly, Mass.) added a clutch RBI single to give the visitors a 9-6 lead. Saint Joseph's (Maine) cut into the deficit once again in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single, but the Chargers added some insurance in the sixth plating three more runs. McLeer got the first RBI on a sacrifice foul out and then Carignan came home on a throw advance. Roeger added the 12th run of the day lacing a hit into center. The Monks got one final run in the game, but the Chargers closed it out 12-8.
On the Mound:
- First year Colin Burchard (Upton, Mass.) hurled 4.2 innings allowing four earned runs with a pair of strikeouts. First year Hayden Goerlich (Amherst, N.H.) picked up his first collegiate win getting four outs including a punch out. Junior Kam Lovelette (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) was next going an inning of work allowing a run with a strikeout. Sophomore Justin Powers (Peabody, Mass.) and junior Jack Mullen (Norfolk, Mass.) closed the door with two shutout innings to power the Chargers into the pod championship.
At the Plate:
- Roeger paced the offense with the four hit day, followed by O'Brien who went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI double. Carignan went 2-for-5 with a pair of ribbys and two runs scored while Watson went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two walks.
Up Next:
The Chargers will take on Mitchell College in the pod championship tomorrow with a first pitch of 10:00 AM. Colby-Sawyer needs to win two games to advance to the GNAC Championship.
