Chargers Pick Up First Win in 2024 With 14-9 Victory Over Clark University

WORCESTER, Mass.  – The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse team picked up their first victory of the season on Wednesday winning by a 14-9 final over Clark University. 

Rapid Recap:
  • Junior Soph Kuhlthau (Cheshire, Conn.) kicked off the game with a goal assisted by junior Heather Hanson (Barnstable, Mass.). First year Andrea Smith (Gray, Maine) was next getting her fourth goal of the year from Hanson to double the lead. Sophomore Cecilia Ponzini (Windham, N.H.) tallied the third of the quarter on the third assist from Hanson. Elizabeth Liakos stopped the run with a goal with 33 seconds left to trim the game to 3-1 headed into the second quarter. 
  • Meghan Fogarty started the second quarter strong for the Cougars with 14:12 remaining in the half. First year Rose Finlayson (Hopkinton, N.H.) got the Chargers back on the board with a strike from Hanson to mark her fourth assist. Clark added another goal, but Hanson and Ponzini each scored to bring the lead to 6-3. The Chargers grew the lead to 9-3 after more strikes by Ponzini, junior Olivia Romo (Marlboro, Vt.) and Hanson to close the first half. 
  • Graduate student Hannah Marquis (Weare, N.H.) kicked off the second half with her second goal of the year to extend the lead to 10-3. The Cougars tried to battle back with three of the next four goals, but Hanson added another goal to keep the score at 11-6 with 7:29 to play in the third. After a Chargers timeout the Cougars continued on the attack with another two goals to cut the deficit to 11-8 with 4:27 to play. Hanson stopped the run with her fourth goal of the day to keep the four goal lead as we headed into the fourth quarter. 
  • The fourth quarter started with eight minutes of scoreless action before Hanson struck again for her fifth goal of the day. Kuhlthau netted her second goal of the day to follow as the lead grew to 14-8 with 4:21 left. Clark added a final goal, but the Chargers held on for the 14-9 victory.

"We were able to come together and make adjustments from our first game that led to our first win of the season," explained Hanson. "We are fired up to see where this season takes us! Also huge shout out to number 3 on her 100th point!"

Inside The Numbers: 
  • Hanson matched a career-best nine points with five goals and four assists to lead the offensive attack. Ponzini tallied four points with three goals and an assist to follow. Kuhlthau moved past 100 points in the win with two goals and two assists, while Finlayson added three points with a goal and two helpers. 
  • The Chargers as a team caused nine turnovers and were 13-18 in clear attempts.
  • Junior AJ Paton (Exeter, N.H.) stopped five shots in her first win of the season. 
  • Elizabeth Liakos led the Cougars with four goals in the loss.

The Chargers will have their first home game on Saturday when Colby-Sawyer host Vermont State University - Castleton with a 1:00 PM start.
