Chargers Come Up Short at Saint Joseph's (Maine)

STANDISH, Maine – The Colby-Sawyer women's soccer team suffered their first loss of the 2023 season on Wednesday falling to Saint Joseph's (Maine) by a 2-1 final.

Rapid Recap:
  • Senior Sam Bishop (Windham, N.H.) had the first chance of the game taking a shot on target 8:55 into the game but was saved by Carly Downey. The Monks countered by getting the first tally as Lelia Weir finished a free kick past a diving first year Lyndsey Valletta (Macedon, N.Y.). First year Riley Paul (Londonderry, Vt.) nearly evened the score hitting the crossbar in the 25th minute. The Monks once again responded doubling the score as Aaliyah Wilson-Falcone scored to make it 2-0 in favor of the home team. The Chargers offense remained stagnant and after a save by graduate student Alexis LeBreton (Bangor, Maine) the Chargers went into the break trailing 2-0.
  •  Bishop again shot into Downey gloves to kick off the second half. The Chargers stayed aggressive as junior Bridget O'Connell (Peabody, Mass.), first year Paige Barnes (Buxton, Maine), and junior Halle Pletzer (Barre, Vt.) all got off shots, but none got past Downey. LeBreton stayed in for the second half making three saves to keep the deficit at two. O'Connell finally broke the shutout picking up her second goal of the year in the 85th minute. Colby-Sawyer had one more chance but Downey kept the Chargers at bay to hold on to the 2-1 win for the Monks.
