LaPorte's Overtime Winner Lifts Chargers Over Keene State College 3-2

KEENE, N.H.  – First year Ryleigh LaPorte (Leicester, Vt.) came in clutch on Wednesday night registering her first collegiate game-winner in an overtime upset of Keene State College. 

Rapid Recap:
  • The Owls dominated the first quarter keeping possession for the first couple of minutes of play. Junior Carly Bernard (Swanze, N.H.) stopped the first shot of the game, but Keene State would deliver the opening goal 8:11 into the game. Grace Bazin found the back of the cage on a perfect pass by Irini Stefanakos to put the home team up 1-0. First year Abby Olden (Belchertown, Mass.) let off the only Charger shot with five minutes to play in the first quarter, but was well wide. The Chargers defense held strong as Sabrina Lippold (Windham, N.H.) picked up a defensive save keeping the Keene State lead at 1-0 headed into the second quarter. In the second quarter the Chargers took the advantage as junior Courtney Larson (Auburn, Maine) found fellow captain senior Aleah Murph (Portland, Maine) who fired a rocket past Clara Gorman to even the score. Colby-Sawyer continued to attack as sophomore Taylor Gaudette (North Conway, N.H.), Murph and LaPorte all launched shots, but were denied by Gorman. Lippold and Gaudette added two more good chances late in the second quarter, but Gorman made two more saves. The Owls had a late flurry getting a corner in the final seconds, but Bernard kicked it away to hold the game at 1-1 headed into the second half. 
  • The Chargers and Owls went back and forth in the third quarter with each team taking one shot which was denied by each goalie as we headed to the fourth even at 1-1. Keene State took the lead in the 50th minute as Stefanakos finished home a corner on an assist by Hailey Patridge. The Chargers battled back earning a penalty stroke, but Murph was denied as Molly Edmark made a miraculous save to hold the lead. The Chargers kept attacking and finally evened the score as Gaudette bested Gorman to even the score at 2-2 with eight minutes left. Murph fired on two more late chances at winners and first year Kylie Walden (Bellingham, Mass.) had the best one with 30 seconds, but all were turned away going into the overtime knotted at 2-2. 
  • The Chargers continued to add pressure on the Owls and after three Colby-Sawyer shots went array LaPorte sealed the win on an assist from Murph to pickup the victory for the visitors.

"I would say that this game was the perfect representation of our team word; that being "together"", said first year Ryleigh LaPorte (Leicester, Vt.). "We had the grit and every single player no matter if they were on the field or sideline wanted the win. We knew we could do it, but we knew it would only happen if we did it TOGETHER!"

Inside The Numbers: 
  • LaPorte has now scored in both of her collegiate games for the Chargers registering her first game-winner tonight. 
  • Murph continues her stellar play with a goal and an assist to lead the offense, while Gaudette picked up her first goal of the season. 
  • Lippold collects the first defensive save of the year for the Chargers. 
  • Bernard is now 2-0 in her career making five saves and allowing two goals in the cage. 
  • The Chargers out shot the Owls 22-12 with a 15-7 on target differential.

The Chargers will debut in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) competition on Friday when they take on Dean College at 4:00 PM in Franklin Mass..
