Carney's Overtime Winner Lifts Chargers Over New England College 2-1

NEW LONDON, N.H.  – The Colby-Sawyer field hockey team bounced back on Wednesday defeating New England College by a 2-1 in overtime. First year Aili Carney (Derry, N.H.) finished the game with a goal off a penalty corner on assists from sophomore Taylor Gaudette (North Conway, N.H.) and senior Aleah Murph (Portland, Maine). 

Rapid Recap:
  • The Pilgrims got the first shot on target in the game in 6th minute as Lauren Hall fired a shot stopped by junior Carly Bernard (Swanze, N.H.). The Chargers took possession back getting a few corners, but shots by Murph, Gaudette and junior Alyssa Slocum (Windsor, Vt.) all went wide to keep the score at 0-0 headed into the break. New England College got off the only shots of the second quarter, but Bernard stayed strong making two saves to keep the game knotted at 0-0 headed into the second half. 
  • In the third quarter the Chargers took the lead as Gaudette beat Makenzie Anderson on a feed from sophomore Cecilia Ponzini (Windham, N.H.) in the 40th minute to put the home team on top. In the fourth quarter the Pilgrims battled back and forth with the Chargers trading shots before a corner found the cage in the 56th minute with Meaghan McCamish getting credited the goal. Both teams fought for the remaining three minutes and change, but the teams held at 1-1 to head into the overtime. 
  • Carney finished the game 53 seconds into the overtime with the winner off of a penalty corner.

"It feels awesome!" First Year Aili Carney (Derry, N.H) said. "It was a whole team effort, I just got the lucky tip in. We really wanted this one..we switched some things up and really pulled it together."

Inside The Numbers: 
  • Carney added her second goal of the season including her first collegiate game-winner in the win, while Gaudette also added her second tally of the year. 
  • Ponzini, Gaudette and Murph added assists for the Chargers. 
  • Bernard picks up her fifth win of the season making five saves. 
  • The Chargers out shot the Pilgrims by a 14-10 margin with New England College edging Colby-Sawyer by a 6-5 on target differential.

The Chargers will host non-conference opponent Thomas College of Maine on Saturday with a 1:00 PM start.
