Lippold's Two Goal Game Lifts Chargers Over Simmons 3-1

NEW LONDON, N.H.  – The Colby-Sawyer field hockey team picked up a massive Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory on Tuesday defeating Simmons by a 3-1 final.

Rapid Recap:
  • The Chargers and Sharks battled in the midfield for the opening minutes with the first shot being fired 11 minutes into the contest by junior Alyssa Slocum (Windsor, Vt.), but Haley Bright made three key saves to keep the game at 0-0. Junior Sabrina Lippold (Windham, N.H.) changed the score at the end of the 11th minute lifting the shot over Bright to give Colby-Sawyer a 1-0 lead. First year Ryleigh LaPorte (Leicester, Vt.) tried to double the score but two more key saves by Bright kept the Charger advantage at 1-0 headed into the second quarter. In the second quarter the Sharks tried to get things going taking their first shot of the game, but it went wide. Sophomore Taylor Gaudette (North Conway, N.H.) had the best chance, but Bright stepped up again making the stop.
  • The third quarter shifted the momentum in the game with the Sharks taking the first five shots in the period. Junior Carly Bernard (Swanze, N.H.) made three key saves but Simmons finally evened the score as Anna Tedeschi finished a sweet pass from Sydney Gonyea in the 36th minute. The Chargers battled back in the 44th minute as first year Aili Carney (Derry, N.H.) passed a great entry to Lippold who fired a rocket past the keeper to give the home team the advantage once again as we headed to the fourth with Colby-Sawyer leaded 2-1. In the 55th minute the Chargers gained insurance as sophomore Cecilia Ponzini (Windham, N.H.) finished home a pass from senior Sarah Babb (South Yarmouth, Mass.) to double the Charger lead. The Sharks tried to get back into it, but Bernard stopped another big shot to hold the victory for the Chargers.
Post Game Press:
"It feels so good to get the home opener win", said junior Sabrina Lippold (Windham, N.H.) "We expected a hard game, and it was, but we came through. I'm very proud of everyone that was on the field! We stayed communicating on defense and it's unreal how well we work together as a team."

Inside The Numbers:
  • Lippold now leads the Chargers in goals in the young season (4) from the defensive position and it is the first in her career with two goals. Ponzini adds her second career goal in the win and first this season.
  • Carney added her first collegiate helper while Babb registered her second assist of the year
  • Bernard stays undefeated in the cage with four saves in the win.
  • The Chargers out shot the Sharks 20-9 with a 13-5 on target differential.
