NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse dropped their home opener on Friday to Emmanuel College by a 20-8 final.
Rapid Recap:
- The Saints took an early 1-0 lead, but after winning the draw control first year Cecilia Ponzini (Windham, N.H.) found the back of the net to even the score. Junior Olivia Romo (Marlboro, Vt.) gave the home team their only lead next finding the net to take a 2-1 advantage over Emmanuel College. The Saints ended the quarter strong getting two scores to take a 3-2 lead headed into the second quarter.
- The Saints added to their lead with a quick strike with 13:18 left in the second quarter. Ponzini cut the lead back to one goal on a beautiful find by sophomore Heather Hanson (Marstons Mills, Mass.). The Saints countered with a 8-0 scoring run while drawing two yellow cards on the Chargers. Colby-Sawyer got another goal late as senior Sydney Stevens (Laconia, N.H.) hit the back of the net on a free position strike.
- In the second half the lead grew to 11 with three more goals, which was stopped by a goal by senior Hannah Marquis (Weare, N.H.). The Chargers had one more chance late in the third quarter by Isabella Thomas turned away Hanson to hold the 10-goal lead headed into the fourth quarter.
- Emmanuel got another score to take a 16-5 lead, but the Chargers countered with three-consecutive goals by Hanson, first year Sophie Pedro (Scituate, R.I.) and junior Ella Lyford (Montpelier, Vt.). The Saints finished the game with the final four strikes to close out the win.
Stats & Figures:
- Ponzini led the offense with two goals. Hanson, Lyford, Marquis and Stevens each added a goal and an assist. Romo added a goal, while Pedro picked up her first collegiate goal.
- Sophomore AJ Paton (Exeter, N.H.) made seven saves for the Chargers in the loss.
- Emily Gates and Livia Fedele led the Saints with four goals and an assist each, while Isabella Thomas made 10 saves in the win.

The Chargers will travel to Hilton Head, South Carolina for a pair of games starting on March 14th against Worcester State University.
