Chargers Conclude Season at EISA Championship

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – The Colby-Sawyer men's alpine skiing team finished their season at Whiteface Mountain this weekend for the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) Championship hosted by Saint Lawrence University.

Rapid Recap Day One (Giant Slalom):
  • First year Brandon Leitner (Truckee, Calif.) had a successful first run with a time of 1:05.4 for the Chargers but was just shy of qualifying for a second run.
  • Close behind was first year Jackson Musial (Bartlett, N.H.) completing his first run in 1:05.9.
Rapid Recap Day Two (Slalom):
  • Junior Chesley Smith (Stowe, Vt.) led the Chargers on day two of the competition after finishing his first run with a time of 59.3 but came up short in qualifying for a second run.
  • Musial followed behind with a 59.9 first run for Colby-Sawyer but also missed out on qualifying for a second run.
Skier Spotlight:
"The race was a blast to end a career on," said senior Finn Husband (Elks Rapid, Mich.). "Eastern Championships never disappoints to bring all the teams together. The season overall was a great opportunity for our young team to get exposure to the competitive circuit. I'm super excited to see what they'll be able to accomplish next year."

Coaches Corner:
"The men started off on Thursday for a make up from the lost giant slalom at the Saint Michael's Carnival and had an outstanding performance on the first run, putting five in the second run," said head coach Andy Locke. "Unfortunately, freezing fog descended on the mountain, and we couldn't finish the second run safely, so we lost the race. This was by far their strongest skiing. The NCAA Regional Championships was really tough. Each athlete ran into some difficulty in the giant slalom, and none qualified for a second run. Saturday's slalom looked to serve up ideal conditions, but some leftover snow from Thursday yielded a very rough course for the later athletes, and we didn't get any men into the second run.

On the season, I couldn't be more proud of this team. They've worked extremely hard and made strong improvements. This is arguably the toughest collegiate race tour in the world, and these athletes have brought it week in and week out. Looking forward to taking this strong skiing into the FIS series this spring as well as nest season. Special shout out to our senior captains who've led this team and really helped build a culture of commitment, performance and respect. I'll miss senior Finn Husband (Elks Rapid, Mich.) and know he'll be successful in anything he does from here. Caity will be back with us as she uses her final year of eligibility while pursuing a master's in Exercise Science. I'd be lost without them, and thank them for their leadership."
