NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team returned to the win column after defeating Anna Maria College 58-48 during a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match on Thursday night. The Chargers improve to a 7-9 conference record with the victory over the AMCATS.
Rapid Recap:
- Sophomore Megan Molettieri (Pelham, N.H.) kicked off the scoring in the first quarter after draining a three pointer to put the Chargers up 3-0. A good layup by Julitza Delgado gave the AMCATS a 4-3 led, but sophomore Marissa Holt (Alfred, Maine) responded by knocking down her first triple of the night. First year Elyza Mitchell (Spofford, N.H.) added four points to Colby-Sawyer's advantage to make it 10-4. Marinique Reddin kept the game close at 10-8 after finishing two good layups for Anna Maria. The Chargers ended the quarter by going on a 7-0 run featuring a goodlayup by sophomore Courtney Brewster (Castleton, Vt.) and a triple from senior Emily Parent (Oakland, Maine) to give Colby-Sawyer a 17-8 led.
- At the start of second quarter, the AMCATS went on an 8-0 run reducing the Chargers advantage to one point. Colby-Sawyer responded by generating their own 8-0 run featuring another three pointer by Parent and a good layup from senior Abby Hamelin (Chesterfield, N.H.) to extend their led to 25-16. Sophomore Gabby Lucertini (Brandford, Conn.) knocked down a triple towards the end of the quarter to help the Chargers preserve their 29-22 led heading into halftime.
- The AMCATS started strong in the third quarter as Reddin and Gina Parmenter each hot jump shots to make it 29-26. Holt finished a jumper and triple to bump Colby-Sawyer's advantage to eight points. Anna Maria fought back by connecting going on a 6-0 run bringing the score to 34-32. Parent disrupted the AMCATS offensive by hitting her third three ball of the game, but Anna Maria would cut the Chargers led in the final seconds of the quarter to make it 37-36.
- In the fourth quarter, the Chargers made a statement by going on an 11-0 run highlighted by a three-pointer from senior Lia Raynowska (Brentwood, N.H.) assisted by Parent to extend their led to 49-36. After Parmenter hit a three ball with under three minutes remaining in the game, Raynowska drainined another triple to keep the Chargers up 52-43. Colby-Sawyer secured the win following made free throw attempts by Lucertini and Holt to defeat Anna Maria by a 58-48 final score.
Player Spotlight:
"It feels great after losing to Anna Maria on the road to beat them at home," said sophomore
Marissa Holt (Alfred, Maine). "Our offensive was flowing tonight, we felt so good passing it around, shots weren't falling in the beginning but we hit some big ones." When asked about what the team's mindset would be heading into Saturday's contest Holt said, "We want to win, we want to move on."
Stats & Figures:
- Holt ended the game with a double-double after scoring 14 points (5-16 FG, 2-9 3-FG, 2-2 FT) and recording 14 rebounds for the Chargers. Parent scored 12 points (4-9 FG, 4-9 3-FG) to go along with three rebounds and three assists. Mitchell tallied nine points (4-5 FG, 1-2 FT), nine rebounds, an assist, and a steal.
- Reddin scored 18 points (7-17 FG, 0-2 3-FG, 4-4 FT) for the AMCATS along with 11 rebounds, three assists, and a pair of steals.
- The Chargers outshot the AMCATS 364% to 26.4% from the field and outrebounded Anna Maria by a 53-37 margin.
