Chargers Winning Streak Snapped by University of Saint Joseph

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team three-game Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) winning streak snapped on Saturday when the Chargers fell to the University of Saint Joseph by a 77-66 final.

Rapid Recap: 
  • The Blue Jays started off flying to a 15-2 lead, which was halted by a three-pointer by senior Lia Raynowska (Brentwood, N.H.). Another three by sophomore Megan Molettieri (Pelham, N.H.) cut the lead down to eight points and after an and-one layup by first year Elyza Mitchell (Spofford, N.H.) the lead was down to 16-11. Sophomore Marissa Holt (Alfred, Maine) finished a layup, but a USJ jumper pushed the lead to 18-13 heading into the second quarter.
  • Raynowska kicked off the second quarter with another fancy finish to get the Chargers within three, but a 8-4 counter by the Blue Jays pushed the lead back to 26-19. The Chargers punched back with a 11-6 run over six minutes to get the game to 32-30, but a final bucket by USJ had the game at 34-30 headed into the break.
  • Colby-Sawyer and University of Saint Joseph traded buckets and after three free throws saw the game at 36-34. The Blue Jays countered with a 12-2 run, which was stopped by a jumper by Holt. The Chargers continued to battle back after another layup by Mitchell, but USJ countered pushing the lead to fifteen points with 10 minutes to play.
  • The Blue Jays continued to control taking a 69-51 lead with 8:10 remaining, but the Chargers were not done with five-straight points from Holt. Another fastbreak layup later in the quarter by sophomore Gabby Lucertini (Branford, Conn.) cut the lead to just nine points, but the Blue Jays would hold on to the 77-66 win.
Stats & Figures:
  • Holt led the offense again with 19 points (6-14 FG, 1-4 3-FG, 6-9 FT) to go along with nine rebounds, five steals and a block. Mitchell had another solid day with 16 points (5-10 FG, 6-13 FT) and three rebounds. Raynowska tallied 14 points (4-8 FG, 1-1 3-FG, 5-6 FT), three rebounds and a pair of assists. Lucertini added 10 points (3-4 FG, 4-6 FT) six rebounds and two assists.
  • Jordan Ouellette paced the Blue Jays with 20 points (9-15 FG, 2-3 FT), seven rebounds and two blocks. Taylor Verboven added a double-double with 16 points (8-12 FG, 0-1 3-FG) and 10 rebounds.

The Chargers will travel to Norwich University on February 2nd with a 5:00 PM tip.
