Daly's Record 11th Game-Winner Lifts Chargers Over New England College 2-1

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Chargers picked up a big victory on Wednesday defeating New England College by a 2-1 final. Senior Aoife Daly's (Harwich, Mass.) 47th minute game-winning goal is one for the history books as the senior captain is now the all-time program record holder for game-winners passing Jordan Teixeira.

Rapid Recap:
  • The Chargers and Pilgrims went back and forth trading chances with senior Lauren Wilkinson (Lynn, Mass.) making four saves in the Colby-Sawyer cage in the first quarter. New England College also took its turn defensively making a key four penalty corners stand late in the second quarter to keep the game at 0-0 heading into the second half.
  • In the third quarter the Chargers broke through as junior Aleah Murph (Portland, Maine) punished a ball passed a diving goalie off a corner pass from sophomore Emma Webster (Campton, N.H.) to give Colby-Sawyer the 1-0 lead. Daly took a final chance to extend the lead, but was turned away by Jackie Mountford. The fourth quarter started with the Chargers getting another goal as Murph rocketed a ball that hit Daly's stick into the net. New England College made sure to add drama scoring just a single minute later as Mikayla Vincent found Matina Hill to beat Wilkinson. The Pilgrims continued to fire shots on but the defense stepped up big to hold strong for the win.
Daly's Record:

Daly is now all alone at the top of the record book when it comes to game-winners picking up her 11th  in her collegiate career.

"Aoife has always been a leader and a clutch player for us", said head coach Emily Dewdney. "I'm so proud that she now sits a top the Colby-Sawyer record books for most game-winning goals. We still have a lot of games left to play this season and I know for a fact that there is more to come from this impressive young woman."

Player Spotlight:

"I think just going back to our word grit, which keeps us digging deep and doing the little things right", said junior Aleah Murph (Portland, Maine). "As coach says the little things turn into the big things and the big things turn into the great things and we did that today. I think we gotta just keep pushing and focusing on the next step ahead. This game is over so it is time to prepare for the next one."

Notes & Notables:
  • Murph led the charge for Colby-Sawyer with a goal, an assist and a defensive save. Daly picked up the other goal with Webster picking up her first collegiate assist.
  • Wilkinson held in strong with six saves to pick up win number four on the season.
