Chargers Stun Simmons University 4-3

BRIGHTON, Mass. – The Chargers field hockey team picked up their biggest win of the season to date on Saturday defeating Simmons University by a 4-3 final on the road. 

Rapid Recap: 
  • In the 11th minute the Sharks took their first lead of the day as Anna Tedeschi beat senior Lauren Wilkinson (Lynn, Mass.) to put the home team up 1-0. In the second quarter the Chargers responded as senior Bella Silva (Danvers, Mass.) redirected a shot by junior Aleah Murph (Portland, Maine) to even the score at 1-1. In the 20th minute Simmons picked up the one goal advantage again as Hannah Groves scored on a deflected pass. Colby-Sawyer answered again in the final minute of the first half as sophomore Alyssa Slocum (Windsor, Vt.) collected a rebound in front and put it past a diving Shark to knot the game at 2-2 heading into halftime. 
  • In the 36th minute the Chargers got their first lead of the day as Slocum scored this time via senior Aoife Daly (Harwich, Mass.) to put the visitors up 3-2. Colby-Sawyer kept the offense rolling as Daly doubled the lead in the 42nd minute on a feed from Murph to keep the Chargers on top 4-2. In the fourth quarter Wilkinson made a pair of saves before the Sharks score their third goal from Tedeschi. The Charger defense held strong to pick up the massive road Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory. 
Player Spotlight:

"Today was more than a game", said sophomore Alyssa Slocum (Windsor, Vt.). "We pulled together and played like a family and supported one another with love. The love of the game and the love of one another."

Stats & Figures:
  • Slocum scored goals number two and three in the week after transitioning from a defender to an offensive player to lead the offense. Daly added a goal and an assist in her return to action for the Chargers. Silva tallied the remaining score. 
  • Murph led the passing with a pair of assists for nine total on the season.
  • Wilkinson picked up win number 22 of her career in the cage for Colby-Sawyer moving her to second in program history passing Jodi Dumayne. Lauren stopped six shots in the win.

The Chargers host rival Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Wednesday with a 4 PM start at Sally Shaw Veitch Track & Field.
