Women's Lacrosse Downed in Season Opener

NEW LONDON, N.H. – A late four-goal surge from Norwich University propelled them to a 15-13 win over Colby-Sawyer College in the Chargers season opener. 
 
Senior Briana Couture (South Hadley, Mass.) paced the offense for the Chargers scoring five goals in her season debut.  Senior captain Jess Tattersall (Keene, N.H.), junior Caroline Tompkins (Marblehead, Mass.) and sophomore Sydney Stevens (Laconia N.H) chipped in with two goals apiece for the Chargers.

How It Happened
  • The Cadets struck first scoring the games first three goals.  Senior Emily Schromm had two of the three goals for Norwich.  After that the Chargers came back going on a four-goal streak of their own, highlighted by two goals from Couture.  Both the Chargers and Cadets traded goals until Couture broke through with under a minute to go for a two-goal streak of her own.  With the score being 9-7 with 19 seconds left, Norwich has one last shot the found the back of the net out of the stick of senior Kathryn Preul to put the Cadets down one heading into half time. 
  • The Chargers stuck first in the second half with a goal from sophomore Hannah Marquis (Weare, N.H.).  Marquis was matched with a free position goal from sophomore Allison Sturgeon.  Freshman Olivia Romo (Marlboro, Vt.) scored her first career goal to put the Chargers up one.  Both teams once again traded goals, until the score was tied up at 12.  The Cadets then went on a three-goal run, topped off with a goal by junior Brittney Poljacik.  Colby-Sawyer batted back to get the game within two with a goal from Tompkins with 58 seconds remaining.

  • Freshman Simone Long (Wales, Maine) had 12 saves in her first career start
  • Couture and senior Allison Piracini (Tewksbury, Mass.) led the team in draw controls won with four each.
