FRANKLIN, Mass. – August 31, 2019 – The Colby-Sawyer College women's soccer team wrapped up a successful first weekend of the season by winning the Bulldog Bash with a 3-2 victory over Fitchburg State on Saturday. The two-day tournament was hosted by Dean College.
Colby-Sawyer improves to 2-0 and will return home on Wednesday to host Southern Maine at 1 p.m. Fitchburg State drops to 1-1 and will host Becker on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
Today's match was the first ever meeting between the two teams.
Colby-Sawyer first-year
Hannah Marquis (Weare, N.H.) put Colby-Sawyer on the board less than six minutes into the contest with her first collegiate tally. The goal was set up by senior
Leah Dupuis (Concord, N.H.).
The Falcons found the equalizer 10 minutes later off the foot of sophomore Taylin Surrette (Bellingham, Mass.).
The Chargers would go back in front in the 29th minute when first-year
Sydney Jimmo (Shelburne, Vt.) finished a feed from senior
Raina Ceryak (Naugatuck, Conn.) for her third goal of the season. Jimmo was named Bulldog Bash MVP.
First-year
Thea Alberti (Wilmington, Mass.) gave Colby-Sawyer a 3-1 lead before halftime with her first collegiate goal. First-year
Brenna Humphrey (Cornish, Maine) was credited with the assist.
The second half went scoreless for 30 minutes before Fitchburg State's McKenzie Tenney (Orange, Mass.) headed a ball past the Colby-Sawyer keeper to cut the deficit in half to 3-2.
Colby-Sawyer's backline held the Falcons off the scoreboard for the rest of the match to secure the 3-2 victory.
Senior
Sam Mitchell (Chester, N.H.) got the win for Colby-Sawyer after making three saves. Sophomore Emily Vitale (Ashland, Mass.) and freshman Dania Politi (Springfield, Mass.) combined to make six saves for the Falcons.
The Chargers outshot the Falcons 26-6 and had a 10-0 advantage in corner kicks.
