Baseball Swept by Suffolk

EAST BOSTON, Mass. - March 31, 2019 - The Colby-Sawyer baseball team dropped both ends of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader against Suffolk on Sunday. The Rams won 8-4 and 8-3. 

Colby-Sawyer drops to 3-14 overall and 1-3 in the GNAC. The Chargers will travel to New England College on Tuesday for a non-conference tilt with the Pilgrims. Suffolk improves to 13-7-1 overall and sit atop the GNAC standings at 6-0. 

GAME ONE - SUFFOLK 8, COLBY-SAWYER 4

Suffolk built a 2-0 lead in the first frame. Blase Cormier and Will Hopkins had RBI hits in the inning. 

Colby-Sawyer cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the second on an RBI ground out by Danny McCrystal.

The Rams put two more across in the third and another in the fourth to take a 5-1 lead. 

McCrystal knocked in Charlie Danaher with a sac fly in the bottom of the fourth before Tim Unczur pulled the Chargers within one in the fifth after a two-run shot in the fifth. 

Suffolk scored one in the sixth and two more in the seventh to secure the 8-4 victory. 

Charlie Batchelder improved to 3-1 on the year after a 5.0-inning performance with four runs (three earned) and five hits allowed with one strikeout for Suffolk. Tyler Zell secured the save 2.0 frames of scoreless working, giving up just one hit. Ryan Glendye suffered the loss after allowing six runs on 10 hits and one walk with a pair of Ks. Derek Griffin gave up two runs on two hits with one punchout in 1.0 inning of relief work.

Unczur and Danaher led the Chargers with a pair of hits apiece. 

GAME TWO - SUFFOLK 8, COLBY-SAWYER 3

After a scoreless first, each team put a run across in the second. 

Suffolk then plated a pair in the third on a Blaise Cromier triple and a Tim Brigham sacrifice. 

Austin Butler answered with a sac fly in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to 3-2 in favor of the Rams. 

The Rams scored once in the fifth and then four times in the sixth to put the game out of reach. Brigham had a three-run homer in the sixth.

The Chargers got a run back in the seventh, but it was not enough as Suffolk hung on for the 8-3 victory. 

Brendan Barrett finished with a pair of hits for the Chargers. 

Suffolk's Steven Ross earned the win with 4.0 innings of work. He gave up one earned run on four hits. Michael Muscarella earned the save after 3.0 innings of relief with no earned runs allowed. 

Tim Unczur was saddled with his first loss of the season after 5.2 innings. He gave up six earned runs on 10 hits and stuck out three. Derek Griffin pitched another inning of relief. He allowed one run on two hits.
