NEW LONDON, N.H. – February 9, 2019 – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team fell to Suffolk, 63-54, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action Saturday afternoon.
Suffolk improves to 18-5 overall and 9-1 in the GNAC. The Rams will host Emmanuel on Tuesday at 5 p.m. Colby-Sawyer falls to 14-9 overall and 6-4 in conference action. The Chargers will host Anna Maria on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Prior to the game, Colby-Sawyer honored seniors
Tanisha Clark (Bridgeport, Conn.) and
Abbie Sansoucy (Douglas, Mass.).
Suffolk sophomore Jenni-Rose DiCecco (Falmouth, Mass.) poured in a game-high 28 points. She was 7-of-16 from the floor, 6-of-11 from long range and made all eight free throw attempts. Sophomore Jordan Hipwell (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) was 7-of-10 to finish with 15 points and nine rebounds. Senior Marissa Gudauskas (Bolton, Conn.) added 13 points and seven rebounds.
Junior
Tianna Sugars (Oxford, Maine) led the Chargers with her 12th double-double of the season and fifth-straight. She had 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting to go with a game-best 15 rebounds. Junior
Kristen Donaghey (Franklin, Mass.) was the second Charger to reach double figures with 11 points.
Tanisha Clark was 3-of-4 for eight points.
Sugars opened the game with a three-pointer for the Chargers, which was answered by a Gabrielle DeComo (Portsmouth, R.I.) layup and a Gudauskas jumper for the Rams. Donaghey put the home team back in front 5-4, but Suffolk received a trey from Gudauskas to retake the advantage which would hold for the remainder of the quarter. The Rams led 20-17 after 10 minutes.
Suffolk held the lead throughout the second quarter and saw the margin balloon to 13 after a Rachel LaSaracina (Colchester, Conn.) trey with less than two minutes to play in the half. Sugars and
Joslin Wainwright (Plainfield, N.H.) got a pair of baskets for Colby-Sawyer, but DiCecco hit a pair of free throws to close the half with the Rams leading 40-29.
Colby-Sawyer cut the deficit to five, 45-40, with 3:07 to play in the third after a
Lexie Hamilton (Sunapee, N.H.) jumper. After a Hipwell jumper,
Tianna Sugars converted a three-point play to pull the home team to within four. Hipwell ended the frame with a good jumper with a second on the clock to take a 53-45 lead into the fourth.
The Rams never relinquished the lead in the fourth as Colby-Sawyer could only get as close as five.
Suffolk was 11-of-26 from beyond the arc, while Colby-Sawyer converted just 2-of-14 attempts from long range.
