Women's Basketball Falls in GNAC Quarterfinals at Emmanuel

BOSTON, Mass. – February 19, 2019 – The #7 seed Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team fell at #2 seed Emmanuel, 61-39, in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament Quarterfinals on Tuesday evening.  

Emmanuel improves to 21-5 and will host #3 Albertus Magnus on Thursday. Albertus Magnus defeated #6 Regis 82-74. Colby-Sawyer ends its season at 14-12.

Junior Tianna Sugars (Oxford, Maine) led the Chargers with her 14th double-double of the season. She finished with 11 points and 14 rebounds. Sophomore Mackenzie Buzzell (Lovell, Maine) added 10 points and six rebounds. Senior Tanisha Clark (Bridgeport, Conn.) registered eight points and five boards.

Yuleska Ramirez-Tejada (South Boston, Mass.) led Emmanuel with 19 points, 12 rebounds and four steals. Molly deBettencourt (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) added 11 points, while Madison McLaughlin (Westerly, R.I.) contributed eight points. Kayla Weaver (West Haven, Conn.) tallied five points and six steals.

Colby-Sawyer led 9-7 midway through the first quarter after a Sugars three-pointer. The Saints scored the next five points to take an 11-9 advantage, but Tanisha Clark made a jumper to tie the game once again. Emmanuel received a Riley Lahiff (North Attleboro, Mass.) jumper and pair of free throws from Weaver to go in front 15-11 before Sugars scored the final bucket of the frame to pull Colby-Sawyer within a pair at 15-13.

deBettencourt made two three-pointers to begin the second quarter and stake the Saints to a 21-13 advantage. The Chargers were able to hang tough and cut the deficit to 23-21 midway through the quarter. Emmanuel used a 7-0 run to take a comfortable 30-21 lead with 1:44 to play in the half. Clark added another basketball for Colby-Sawyer before the Saints ended the half with a McLaughlin layup to take a 32-23 lead at the break.

Emmanuel outscored the Chargers 21-9 in the third and 8-7 in the fourth to secure the 61-39 victory and advance to the GNAC semifinals.
