Women's Basketball Suffers Setback to Oneonta

SAN JUAN, P.R. - December 21, 2019 - The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team suffered a 43-36 setback to Oneonta on Saturday at the Colegio Universitario de San Juan as part of the Puerto Rico Clasico Tournament.

Colby-Sawyer drops to 9-3 and will return home to host Thomas on Jan. 4. The Red Dragons improve to 3-6.

Senior Tianna Sugars (Oxford, Maine) posted her ninth double-double of the season to lead the Chargers with 11 points and 14 rebounds. She now has 1,164 career points and moved past current assistant coach and Colby-Sawyer Hall of Famer Noelle Surette '08 into eighth place on the all-time scoring list. Senior Lexie Hamilton (Sunapee, N.H.) and first-year Caitlyn Boucher (Swanzey, N.H.) scored seven points apiece. Hamilton also collected six steals. Junior Joslin Wainwright (Plainfield, N.H.) added six points and six rebounds.

Oneonta was led by Leanne Corso's double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds. Olivia Allrich also grabbed 10 rebounds to go with six points. Clara Culeton and Lauren Obermayer contributed seven points apiece.

The Red Dragons began the contest on a 6-0 run before Colby-Sawyer got on the board with a Hamilton trey with 4:21 left in the first. The Chargers then held Oneonta scoreless for the remainder of the frame, while added eight more points to take a 10-6 lead after 10 minutes.

Oneonta opened the second quarter with seven straight points, capped by a Culeton layup, to take a 13-10 lead. The Chargers then found the range and scored all 10 of their points over the final six minutes of the stanza, while holding the Red Dragons scoreless, to take a 20-13 advantage into the break.

The Chargers took their largest lead of the game, midway through the third, after a Sugars jumper put Colby-Sawyer on top 27-17. Oneonta's Corso then took over scoring eight points, six at the free throw line, to pull the Red Dragons within three at the end of three, 30-27.

Early in the fourth, a Wainwright gave Colby-Sawyer a 36-29 lead with 7:47 showing on the clock. Unfortunately for the Chargers, that would be the last bucket they would score. Oneonta chipped away at the deficit and took the 37-36 advantage with a Culeton jumper at 2:50. The Red Dragons added six more points on four free throws and a jumper in the final minute to win the game 43-36. Oneonta benefited from seven Colby-Sawyer turnovers in the frame that resulted in six points. The Red Dragons also made 4-of-6 free throw attempts in the fourth.

Oneonta shot 25.9% from the floor, while Colby-Sawyer was 23.2%.

Colby-Sawyer was outrebounded by Oneonta 48-41. The Red Dragons had 11 second chance points off 13 offensive rebounds.
