BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - November 22, 2019 - The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season on the first day of the Cave Classic hosted by Bridgewater State. The Chargers fell to nationally ranked Bowdoin, 80-35.
Bowdoin, ranked #5 in the most recent D3Hoops.com poll and #6 in the WBCA poll, improves to 3-0 and will play Bridgewater State tomorrow at 2 p.m. for the championship. Colby-Sawyer drops to 3-1 and will play Salve Regina in the consolation game at noon against Salve Regina. Bridgewater State defeated Salve Regina 78-57 earlier this evening.
Colby-Sawyer was led by first-year
Sydney Noyes (Newbury, Mass.) who scored seven points and grabbed five rebounds. Senior
Tianna Sugars (Oxford, Maine) added six points and five rebounds. Senior
Lexie Hamilton (Sunapee, N.H.) contributed five points, five rebounds, four steals and a pair of assists.
The Polar Bears received a game best 14 points from Moira Train. Sela Kay added 12 points on 4-6 shooting. Anika Helmke was 3-5 from three to finish with 11 points and three blocks. Megan Tan rounded out the top scorers for Bowdoin with 10 points to go with six assists.
Bowdoin scored the first nine points of the game and never looked back. The Polar Bears led 19-10 after the first quarter and 39-19 at the break. Tran tallied 12 first-half points to pace the Polar Bears, while
Tianna Sugars scored six to lead the Chargers.
A strong third quarter extended the Bowdoin lead to 63-25 as the Polar Bears outscored the Chargers 24-6 in the period. The fourth quarter was won by Bowdoin 17-10 as they went on for the 80-35 victory.
Bowdoin knocked down 12 three-pointers, while holding Colby-Sawyer to one make from beyond the arc.
