Chargers Cruise to 85-33 Win over Dean in Season Opener

NEW LONDON, N.H. – November 12, 2019 – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team began the 2019-20 campaign with an 85-33 victory over Dean College Tuesday evening at the Hogan Sports Center.  

Colby-Sawyer goes to 1-0 and will host a tip-off tournament on Friday and Saturday. The Chargers square off against Fitchburg State at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, followed by Colby versus Saint Lawrence. Dean falls to 0-2. The Bulldogs host a tip-off tournament this weekend and will play Clark at noon on Saturday. Dean will be joining the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) next fall as a core member. 

Senior Tianna Sugars (Oxford, Maine) led all players with 24 points on 9-12 shooting. She added 10 rebounds to move into 10th on the program's all-time list with 685. Senior Lexie Hamilton (Sunapee, N.H.) contributed 14 points, 12 assists, six steals and five rebounds. Junior Joslin Wainwright (Plainfield, N.H.) shot 7-11 from the floor to finish with 15 points to go with a team best and career high 11 rebounds.

Dean received 11 points from sophomore Mikayla Rudder (Springfield, Mass.). First-year Alexah Potter (East Hartford, Conn.) grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.

The Chargers came out clicking on both ends of the floor to begin the season. Colby-Sawyer forced seven turnovers and shot 50% from the floor to lead 20-8 after 10 minutes. Wainwright scored seven in the frame.

The second quarter was much of the same for the home team as Colby-Sawyer made 9-of-14 shots (64.3%) with 16 points coming in the paint. Sugars poured in 11 points in the quarter to help the Chargers to a 45-17 lead at the break.

Colby-Sawyer outscored the Bulldogs 23-7 in the third with more dominant play inside and stifling defending. Sugars was 4-6 for 10 points and six rebounds, while Colby-Sawyer tallied 18 points in the paint and 11 off turnovers.

The home team added to its lead with a 17-9 advantage in the fourth to win the game 85-33.

Colby-Sawyer shot 48.6% from the floor and held Dean to 20.3%. The Chargers finished with a 52-38 advantage in rebounding.
