LEWISTON, Maine - January 21, 2019 - The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team fell at Bates College, 66-50, on Monday evening.
Colby-Sawyer drops to 11-7 and will look to halt a three-game skid at home on Thursday against Great Northeast Athletic Conference opponent Rivier at 7 p.m. Bates improves to 8-8.
Junior
Tianna Sugars (Oxford, Maine) led the Chargers with 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting and nine rebounds. She also collected three blocks to move into 10th on the all-time list with 94. Junior
Lexie Hamilton (Sunapee, N.H.) finished with 10 points, six rebounds and four assists. Junior
Kristen Donaghey (Franklin, Mass.) added nine points and seven boards.
Bates was led by Meghan Graff's 19 points. Julia Middlebrook was the only other Bates player to reach double figures with 10 points off the bench. Taylor McVeigh brought down a game best 13 rebounds.
The Bobcats outscored the visitors in the first quarter 23-12 thanks to 5-of-7 from three-point land. The home team increased its advantage to 20, early in the second, but the Chargers hung tough making the same amount of field goals as Bates in the frame. Colby-Sawyer shot 57.1% from the floor, but Bates held a 23-20 edge in points in the second to take a 46-32 lead after 20 minutes.
In a low-scoring third quarter, Bates was still able to add on to its lead thanks to the three ball. Colby-Sawyer shot 3-of-13 in the stanza and Bates made just 4-of 20, but two of them were treys. The Bobcats won the quarter 10-7 to take a 56-39 lead.
Each team made four buckets in the fourth and Colby-Sawyer edged Bates in the frame 11-10 for the final score of 66-50 in favor of the home team.
The Bobcats made just five more buckets than Colby-Sawyer, but 13 of their 25 makes came from beyond the arc.
