NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 8, 2018 – The Colby-Sawyer women's tennis team defeated Suffolk, 9-0, in Saturday's Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opener.
Colby-Sawyer evens its record to 2-2 and improves to 1-0 in the conference. The Chargers will travel to Johnson & Wales, the reigning GNAC champion, next Saturday. Suffolk drops to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the GNAC. The Rams play at Roger Williams on Monday.
The Chargers swept doubles play in convincing fashion winning each match by an 8-1 score. Sophomore 
Yashu Yang (Kunming City, China) and first-year 
Anna Kopituk (Morristown, Tenn.) defeated first-year Ilda Ascic (Sarevo, Bosnia) and senior Delaney Dunlap (Hingham, Mass.) at the top flight. Senior duo 
Aislinn O'Connor (New Fairfield, Conn.) and 
Maddy Gemerek (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) earned the win at No. 2 over senior Elena Cisneros Garcia (Barcelona, Spain) and first-year Kendall Smith (Stuttgart, Germany). The No. 3 tandem of junior 
Alexa Conlin (Westborough, Mass.) and senior 
Hilary Boucher (Presque Isle, Maine)  gave Colby-Sawyer the 3-0 lead with a victory over senior Meagan French (Newton, N.H.) and first-year Jordan Miller (East Longmeadow, Mass.).
All six Chargers then won singles matches in straight sets. The closest match was at No. 5 between Conlin and French. After Conlin won the first set 6-2, she then needed a tie break in the second set to win the match 7-6 (7-1).
