CHICOPEE, Mass. – August 31, 2018 – Junior
Alie Jones (Cape Neddick, Maine) scored 25 seconds into the first overtime period to lift the Colby-Sawyer field hockey team to a 2-1 season opening victory at Elms.
Elms scored the first goal of the season off the stick of Carissa Ramirez nearly 19 minutes into the game. Evelyn DeVaux set up her teammate to give the home team a 1-0 lead.
Despite holding a 9-7 lead in shots and a 5-1 penalty corner advantage, the Chargers trailed 1-0 at the half.
Colby-Sawyer continued to apply pressure on the offensive end and finally broke through 10 minutes into the second frame. Senior
Sierra Schuster (Hopkinton, N.H.) found the stick of senior teammate
Jordan Teixeira (Exeter, N.H.) who deposited the game-tying goal into the back of the cage.
The game remained a 1-1 draw after 70 minutes.
The Chargers wasted little time in the overtime session as
Alie Jones scored 25 seconds in to send the Chargers home with the victory.
Julia Lanctot was credited with the assist.
Colby-Sawyer finished the game with a 20-10 margin in shots and a 10-3 edge in corners.
Sophomore goalie
Abby Ladd (Colchester, Vt.) had a pair of saves for Colby-Sawyer, while junior
Kailyn Lapham (Medway, Mass.) and freshman
Whitney O'Brien (Derry, N.H.) chipped in with a defensive save apiece. Nora Newman made four stops in 51 minutes of action for the Blazers.
The Chargers return to action tomorrow with a 1 p.m. game at Gordon. Elms will travel to Gordon on Monday for a 2 p.m. contest.
